The District 18 Convention was held at Ava, Post 5993 on May 7, 2011. The day started out pouring rain but started clearing as everyone gathered for the meeting and turned out nice before the day was over. Nine of District 18 Posts were represented with Hartville, Post 3135 and Summersville, Post 7222 absent. A total of 33 members were present for the business session that began promptly at 10:00 a.m. District Commander Vernon "Butch" LaMont opened the meeting and the acting Chaplain was Georg Andersen. Previous minutes were read and approved and the Quartermasters report was given in detail and accepted. Post Commanders Report was given by each of the nine posts present.
An election was held under "New Business" and the following will be serving as District Officers for the 2011-12 year: CDR – Chris Johnston, post 1014; Sr-Vice CDR – Stephen Box, post 473; Jr- Vice CDR – William Moriarty,post 3009; Quartermaster – Edward Hawley, post 3770; Chaplain – Georg Andersen, post 3770; Judge Advocate – Vernon LaMont, post 4107; Surgeon – Archie Daily, post 3770; 3-Year Trustee – Ruth Vaughn, post 3770. Commander –elect Johnston appointed Edward Hawley as District 18 VSIO and Iris Joe Kelley as Adjutant.
The officers-elect were duly installed and will assume office following the installation of the Dept of Mo Commander during the Department Convention.

During the joint meeting following lunch a special presentation was made to VFW Life member Archie Sisney. Comrade Sisney was born on August 19, 1919 in Nottinghill, Mo and joined the US Army on October 30, 1942 and saw action in Europe and the Battle of the Bulge. Comrade Sisney had never received his medals and arrangements were made to be presented during this meeting. Sergeant 1st Class Jimmy Troy, Station Commander of the West Plains, Mo Recruiting Station was on hand to present the medals along with District 18 Commander Vernon "Butch" LaMont. The event was coordinated by Comrades Sisney's caregiver, Freeda Evans. The following medals were presented: Good Conduct medal, American Campaign medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, & WWII Victory medal. Also presented wee the Marksmanship Badge with Carbine Bar and Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII. Comrade Sisney is a member of Post 5366 in Isabella, Mo.
