VFW Post 2513 in Warrensburg will host a POW/MIA event at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1 at the Adams Memorial Cemetery near the Pleasant Bethel Baptist Church. VFW Post 4195 will host a reception at Knob Noster following the ceremony.
This event will honor the sacrifice of a Johnson County soldier, William S. Adams who died on Oct. 5, 1944 at the age of 20 at the Siegfried Line in Germany. He was a member of the 743rd Tank Battalion, which came onto Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 and helped break the German line at Urbach and Aachen.
His sister is still alive and she is William’s last direct relative. Adams’ niece indicates his medals and service flag were lost in a house fire and the post will be working to replace those items as well as pursuing a new gravestone with the Purple Heart medallion.
Also honored will be two Missouri soldiers, also members of the 743rd Tank Battalion, who are still considered missing in action.
This ceremony honors not only Adams and the two MIA, but all young men who left Missouri to save the world from tyranny.
We hope you will consider joining us.
