Local VFW Post 5443 is busily preparing for its annual Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27, 2013. The ceremony, as in years past, will be held at 10 a.m., at the downtown court house square.
Every year the local VFW post hosts a Memorial Day Service in order to pay tribute to the men and women of Dunklin County who gave their lives in order that we might enjoy the God given freedoms we have today.
At the present time, plans are for Mike Mowrer, attorney and former Battery Commander/Fire Base Commander during the Vietnam War, to present the invocation. The keynote speaker for the event this year will be Ron Myers, United States Navy Veteran and Vietnam War Veteran.
Following the address given by Myers, a floral tribute will be presented by Freddie Greenway, Vietnam War Veteran and Tank Commander and Homer Swain, American Legion and Cold War Veteran.
Taps this year will be performed by Reverend Harry Turner, Quartermaster of VFW 5443 and Vietnam Veteran. Turner was the keynote speaker at last year’s ceremony.
To conclude the service, the V.F.W. Post 5443 members will coordinate the traditional lowering and folding of the flag in honor of the United States of America.
