Commission seeks women veterans for awards

KANSAS CITY – The Missouri Veterans Commission seeks women veterans to apply before Monday, Dec. 31, for a State of Missouri War Medallion Award that will be presented during a special program in March.
Rebecca Bradley, Minority Veterans Coordinator with the commission, is contacting veterans organizations and service providers to find women veterans eligible for the awards.
“I am planning the presentation ceremony for March 2019 during Women’s History Month,” Bradley said. “I need at least 20 women to apply before the end of December for the medallion, which will be presented at the World War I museum.”
The State of Missouri issues the awards to eligible veterans, spouses of veterans, or the eldest living survivor of veterans who served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield, and Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn. The Jubilee of Liberty is available for those who participated in the Invasion of Normandy.
Service in a foreign country is not required, Bradley said.
“Women veterans who served outside of the award dates will receive a certificate but not receive a medallion,” she said. “I want all women to be recognized.”
Applications, including a copy of the veteran’s DD-214 or other acceptable documentation, must be received before Monday, Dec. 31. Documentation can also be proof of honorable discharge with official personnel records, proof of medals or newspaper clippings.
The medallion is available to men and women who served, but Bradley hopes enough women will apply for recognition to hold the ceremony. Recipients will receive a medal, a medallion and a certificate recognizing their service and sacrifice.
An application is available at www.moguard.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/All-in-One-Application-Veteran-Awards.pdf and can be mailed to Bradley at Missouri Veterans Commission, 1601 E. 18th St., Suite 160, Mailbox No. 9, Kansas City, MO 64108 or faxed to 816-889-2058.
