C.V. Cummings Chapel Hill Post 9100 has joined with  UNC Chapel Hill Campus Recreation to sponsor a Turkey Trot on Veterans Day.  The Turkey Trot is a 5K fun run or one mile fun walk.  This is an annual event that usually collected a registration fee and participants ran to receive awards and prizes.  The focus this year went to veterans as the event falls on Veterans Day.  Participants are donating non-perishable food items for homeless vets.

Post 9100 was approached and responded by assisting with organization and gaining participation of the Durham Rescue Mission.  The rescue mission helps homeless veterans with lodging, food, counseling and assistance as they work to regain employment and permanent housing.  Over 50 homeless veterans are usually assisted at any given time.

Fleet Feet Sports and American Legion Post 6, Chapel Hill, are also co-sponsors.

This is an example of what can be done in the local community to assist veterans and to increase the visibility of the VFW in our home towns.  Have an idea?  Why not give the district commander a call and talk.  Contact District Commander
