Swansboro, North Carolina

January 2013

 Comrades, Brothers, & Sisters,

One resolution I have always made, and try always to keep is this; “to rise above the little things.” I hope that everyone was able to ring in the New Year on a happy note. December was a great month for our post. Not only were we were able to attain 100% membership, we were able to attain it before the first of the year! I have asked around and no one can remember this ever happening. This is not because of me, but because of all your hard work and dedication to your post! For that, I thank you all. I would like to thank all the ladies who helped decorate the canteen for the holidays and especially those of you who helped Peggy reach the top half of the tree!

If you were unable to make the last meeting, the State Commander, Ted Briggs was in attendance. Even though I did not allow him to speak, he still had nothing but rave reviews for our post. He’s extremely impressed with the improvements we have made and the direction we are headed. From him to you; “keep up the good work!”

As promised, the canteen By-Laws have been revised. Several elected Post Officers, members of the House Committee and I all had a hand in the new proposed By-Laws. Copies of the proposed By-Laws will be behind the bar for Post Members to review. I accordance with the National By-Laws of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, please consider this correspondence as being notified 20 days prior. The new By-Laws will be voted on at the regularly scheduled meeting in February.  In an effort to decrease cost, please return the copy to the bartender for the next Post Member to review. If you would like an electronic copy of the proposed By-Laws, please email me at

January will be a joint meeting. The Commander of the Swansboro Young Marines, Dana Cozzens will be in attendance along with a few of the Young Marines. She will be speaking to us about the mission of the Young Marines and about how they plan on giving back to the post.

One big change for the New Year is the cost of all food items on the menu will be increasing by $.25. The cost increase is to help the canteen offset the cost of goods provided. Another change for the New Year will be this newsletter. Every month I will have a trivia question. The first person to contact me with the correct answer will receive a free t-shirt. I will keep track of the winners and the all will be recognized. This month’s question is easy; the two battalions of Continental Marines officially became “resolved” when Congress issued the first commission to whom?

The District 4 meeting will be held on January 6th in Clinton. As always, let’s have a good showing From Swansboro.

Commander Scott

Chaplain’s Report for January 2013:   Hello Brothers and Sisters of Post 9960.  This month is a somber one. We had a brother passé away, and I apologized, I forgot to write his name down and report it in this newsletter. I know this newsletter will be printed after the Holidays; I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a safe and healthy New Years. As, we sit around the dinner table for the holiday, lets us remember our service men and women who cannot be home with their families, lets pray for their safe return. Let’s us also remember the lives lost in the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., keep them and their families in your thoughts and prays. I would like to invite everyone to participate in the calling of names, on the first Saturday of each month, at the Viet Nam Wall in Jacksonville, at 12noon, this month it will be on January 5th, please join us.

Though for the month:

“Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone.”

I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year!  Hope y’all had a very Merry Christmas and if you traveled are now home safe and sound.  Our annual Christmas dinner/meeting held at Rucker Johns was another success.  We even had a surprise guest.  Farres Upton, our Department Chief of Staff, joined us for the festivities. The next District meeting is Sunday, Jan 6, 2013 in Clinton.  There will be a social the night before. The luncheon will start at noon, with the meeting starting at 1:00PM. Please plan on attending. On Dec. 17, 2012, Hospital VAVs Chairman, Donna West, Sisters Ruth Boenitz, Geri Crosby, JoAn Overfelt and myself delivered the Fayetteville VA Medical Center pillows and all the items we collected from their wish list to the facility. What a worthwhile trip. The Volunteer Services Director, Norma Fraser, explained to us how important it is and how thrilled the patients are to receive their Christmas stockings filled with all the donated items and extras, such as the pillows. All necessities are supplied to them, but the extras and monetary donations help to provide the needed services to our veterans and put a huge smile on their faces. We will continue in our efforts to support this very worthwhile cause. When the next trip is scheduled, you should seriously consider going along. It’s that time of the year, Ladies, to start working on our Buddy Poppy entry for the C of A conference from Feb 1 – 3, 2013. Please stay tuned for dates and times when we will be getting together to work on this project.  It’s coming REAL soon. In addition, as in October, there will be a CA&R table at the conference selling items to benefit cancer aid and research.  Please consider donating an item for this table. We will discuss further at our upcoming January meeting. UPCOMING EVENT: Cancer Aid & Research Chairman, Geri Crosby, has begun planning our annual Valentine’s dance.  The dance will be held on Saturday, Feb 9, 2013 from 7 to 11PM. Note change in time. Our own Johnnie and Peggy Miller will be the Djs for the event. Watch for flyers in the Canteen and around the area for further details. Reminder that the monthly meeting on Thursday, Jan 10, 2013 will be a joint meeting. Please plan on attending. VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER: If you have not done so, please remit your dues. I’m sad to report the passing of  Sister Jean Wokosky’s husband and Sister Eileen Wokosky’s  father-in-law, Men’s Auxiliary member John Wokosky this past month.  And sadly, on of our members, Mary Yost, also passed away in December. Please keep their families and friends in your thoughts and prayers.  If you  need to get in touch with me, you may either contact the VFW, 252-393-8053 and they will pass along any message or contact me directly at 252-626-7226.
