Last week, more than 500 VFW members convened in the nation’s capital for the 2016 VFW Legislative Conference. Armed with the VFW’s 2016 Priority Goals, VFW advocates urged their elected members of Congress to transform the VA so that it can more efficiently and effectively serve you, America’s veterans.

VFW National Commander John A. Biedrzycki, Jr. testified before a special joint hearing of the House and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committees, focusing on recommendations for transforming the VA, while also touching on important issues ranging from access to health care, women veterans’ issues and the disability claims appeals process, to toxic exposure and the potential damage of privatizing VA. Illinois Post and Auxiliary Provide Clean Water for Flint, Mich.

#VFWPostPride is a great way to show off how your Post makes an impact.

Members of VFW Post 311, its Auxiliary and citizens of Richton Park, Ill., came together to provide clean water and donations for fellow VFW Post 8236 and the entire Flint, Michigan, community. Successfully collectingand distributing nearly 600 cases of water, the members of VFW Post 311 are excellent examples of the #VFWPostPride displayed by VFW and Auxiliary members worldwide. VFW Announces National Youth Scholarship Winners

This year, more than 166,000 students submitted entries.

The VFW proudly announced the national winners of its annual Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen youth scholarship competitions, live during the 2016 VFW Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. Grayson Campbell from Panama City, Fla., was awarded the $30,000 first-place prize in the Voice of Democracy competition, and Shane Stafford was named the first-place Patriot’s Pen winner, receiving a $5,000 award. Mental Health Struggle Takes the Social Media Spotlight

The stigmas surrounding mental health and treatment often discourage service members from talking about their struggles, but one senior enlisted leader is trying to change that. Command Sgt. Maj. Christopher Greca recently posted to Facebook about his own mental healh struggles and how he sought treatment at Walter Reed. DOD Improves Discharge Upgrade Process

Policy update aids previously denied veterans with PTSD

DOD has just issued a new memo that addresses a loophole left from previous changes to the requests for discharge upgrades process for veterans who may have been suffering from PTSD before it was a recognized diagnosis. Restrictions keeping veterans who have previously been denied under old rules from reapplying has been corrected while also waiving the statute of limitations under certain circumstances.
