Recently, the Tony K Burris VFW Post 3608 applied for a Community Support Grant through the National VFW Foundation, and were awarded $1,000 to help our our local community. In the grant application, Post 3608 had specified they wanted to help out Blanchard’s first responders for all they have done for Post members as well as the community.
In speaking with the Blanchard Fire Department, they had a need for Thermal Imaging Cameras that department members could use in full gear. Not only would these cameras help find hot spots in smoke-filled areas, they could also be used to find missing people using their heat signatures during rescue operations. Each one of these cameras was well over $800.
The Blanchard Police Department had just added a couple of new officers. One of the more expensive pieces of equipment each officer needs is a ballistic vest, and these are items that the department can’t just keep in inventory as they are custom fit to each officer. Each of these vests cost $750.
The $1,000 award to our Post meant that we had $500 for each department. Post membership voted to add $400 more to that so that we were able to pay $700 of the cost of one of the cameras, and with the help of a $50 donation from a Post member, were able to pay the full $750 price for a vest for one of Blanchard’s officers.
