VFW Post 3608 Commander Vern Babcock announced the local kick-off of this year’s VFW’s Voice of Democracy Scholarship competition and Patriot’s Pen youth essay competition.
The Voice of Democracy is open to high school students who have the opportunity to complete for their share of more than $150,000 in scholarships with the first-place winner nationally winning a $30,000 scholarship. Students must write and record a 3-5 minute essay on this year’s theme “American History: Our Hope for the Future”. All state winners will also win a four-day trip to Washington, DC.
The Patriot’s Pen essay competition is open to students in grades 6-8. There are thousands of dollars of prizes with first prize nationally being $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC. Students compete by writing a 300-400 word essay on this year’s theme “America’s Gift to My Generation.”
In both competitions, in addition to national prizes there are prizes awarded at the VFW’s local, district and state level as well. 1 out of 15 entries will move from the local VFW Post to the district competition. District winners will advance to state and state winners advance to the national finals. Deadlines for entries are October 31st, 2017. Information has been sent to local schools, but students can enter directly by getting the entry forms from the local VFW Post 3608.
