VFW Post 609, Alexandria, Virginia
Post 609 meets on the second Saturday of every month at our “Post Home”, in the Caretaker’s building of the Alexandria National Cemetery, located on Wilkes Street in Alexandria, VA. For the immediate future, however, the Post is holding its meetings at VFW Post 3150, located at 2119 19th Street, North, in Arlington. This is a temporary location due to the fact that the Caretaker’s lodge at the Cemetery is undergoing MAJOR refurbishment and we hope to be able to move back in sometime in the next few months.
Since we meet on federal property, no alcoholic beverages are allowed anywhere on the site, and no smoking is allowed except outside of the building.
Annually, we sponsor–and host–the “Flags Out” ceremony for Memorial Day (with the flags being collected and re-stored on the following weekend) plus the “Wreaths Across America” ceremony which is held in December. We also continue to render any and all assistance to the Cemetery office, located in Quantico Marine Base, any time the flag needs to be lowered or raised, inspect the cemetery and Caretaker building after heavy storms, and other requests as they may occur.
Through our efforts, the Alexandria National Cemetery has become a place of assembly for other military or historical groups, such as the Daughters Of The American Revolution.
If you are eligible to join the VFW, and would like to join a community-focused VFW group, we would enjoy hearing from you.
