Warrior Hike – “Walk Off the War”

My name is Mike Sepal, and I work with a veteran nonprofit organization called Warrior Hike (www.warriorhike.org). Warrior Hike is an outdoor therapy program that supports combat veterans transitioning from their military service by thru-hiking America’s National Scenic Trails.

This spring and summer we have two veterans that will be hiking all 1,200 miles of the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin from May 3 to August 1, 2015. Listed below are the 14 VFW Posts in Wisconsin where the two Warrior Hikers will be stopping to receive support during their hike on the Ice Age Trail.

By hosting our veterans in their communities they are providing them with a much needed rest from their journey in addition to helping them reintegrate into society by establishing meaningful relationships between them and the community’s veterans and citizens.

Listed below is a list of the recommended types of support that are the most beneficial to our veterans who are hiking the Ice Age Trail:

Transportation: Providing rides to and from the trail head is greatly appreciated, especially when communities are located farther than walking distance from the trail.

Lodging: Taking a shower, doing laundry, and sleeping in a bed are very welcome after a week on the trail. Community members sometimes offer to take our veterans home for the night, while others have provided motel rooms.

Dinner: Communities often will organize a pot luck dinner, which provides an excellent opportunity to establish camaraderie among our veterans and your community’s veterans and citizens.

Attached are the biographies of our Ice Age Trail veterans and an article from the VFW Magazine about Warrior Hike.

If you require additional information regarding this matter please feel free to contact me at (253) 863-5216.

Thank you again for helping to facilitate the support by the Wisconsin Veterans of Foreign Wars for the Warrior Hike program, and our two veterans, as they hike the 1,200 mile long Ice Age Trail from May 3, to August 1, 2015.

Respectfully,
Michael Sepal
