Burns Post 388, Wausau, has been working to be welcoming and helpful to younger veterans. When the Department of Wisconsin urged posts to adopt National Guard units, 388 adopted the Wausau unit. When National urged posts to reach out to Iraq and Women veterans, the Post started making plans to brief the women vets who had recently returned from the Iraq deployment. Renee Simpson coordinated getting speakers for the briefing from members of the Women Veterans Advocate Committee and featured Michelle Rathke, Merrill Post Commander, and Arlene Banks, former Department Surgeon. Scheduling an event with the Guard can be a challenge but the Post Chief of Staff, Jim Maas, was able to work with the unit’s Point of Contact and the Training NCO to find an hour near the end of a drill weekend to hold the briefing. Topics included information on state veterans programs for women, the She Serves programs and retreat, the VFW National Home for Children, and benefits of VFW membership.
