The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States announces that Michele Rathke of Merrill VFW Post 1638 has once again achieved All-American status as Post Commander in the VFW Department of Wisconsin. The criteria for this honor are based on outstanding achievements in membership growth and participation in VFW programs that benefit veterans and their communities. The title of All-American Commander is one of the most prestigious honor given by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Rathke also serves as Senior Vice Commander of the Seventh District of the Department of Wisconsin. As an All-American Post Commander, Rathke will receive a distinguished cap, pin, and recognition by her VFW comrades. The Veterans of Foreign Wars is America’s largest organization of war zone veterans. Since its inception more than 100 years ago, the VFW has donated millions of dollars and volunteer hours, been a strong supporter of the country’s youth, and of patriotic and educational efforts. The VFW has also been an unwavering advocate to the military, its veterans, and their families.
The purpose of the Bob Munro Memorial Veterans Service Award is to honor those among us who go above and beyond ordinary efforts in support of veterans, active duty troops and their families. This year’s winner is Bernie Gauerke, Burns Post 388, Wausau. Gauerke has served the VFW in several capacities at the Post and District levels as well as in other veterans organizations.

Why? Because in a letter to VFW National Commander John Hamilton, the Defense Department again said they would not lower the status of the medal, which now ranks 9th highest out of five dozen current medals and ribbons in the order of precedence — and you don’t have to go to war to earn it! As of this morning, H.R. 833 had only 41 sponsors out of 435 members of the House, and S. 470 had only 10 sponsors out of 100 members of the Senate. We need more! This VFW-supported legislation has bipartisan support because it is the right thing to do for the troops who go into harm’s way and not home every night. This is a policy disagreement over the placement of the new medal, not whether drone operators, cyber warriors and others don’t deserve to be properly recognized … Continue reading
