Every year, thousands of VFW and Auxiliary delegates gather to represent the organization’s total membership of nearly 1.7 million at the weeklong convention. While there, our mission is to approve new national priorities to guide our organization as we lobbies Congress on issues important to the nation’s veterans, service members and their families. Convention delegates also elect new leadership, as well as recognize prominent individuals and organizations for their support of veterans and military personnel. Save the date for the 2018 national convention, which will be held in Kansas City, Mo., July 21-25, 2018. The 118th VFW National Convention was held July 22 – July 26, in New Orleans.

It’s not every day you see a military jet rolling down Grand Avenue, but that was the sight on the evening of June 13 in Wausau. That’s when the mounted aircraft which was once on display at Wausau’s VFW Burns Post 388 on River Drive was moved to Alexander Airport Park. The move was a joint effort between the Burns Post, City of Wausau, U.S. Air Force, and the Air National Guard from Dane County’s Truax Field. The Air National Guard used the move as a training exercise in the removal, recovery, and movement of downed aircraft. Members of the 115th Fighter Wing Crash, Disaster or Disabled Aircraft Recovery Team then returned to the VFW Clubhouse as the Post and Auxiliary finished their monthly meetings for socializing and comradery.

After years of trying to collect reenlistment bonuses from California National Guard members and mounting pressure from the VFW, Congress and other VSOs, the Department of Defense (DOD) suspended its collection efforts in October of 2016. VFW National Commander Brian Duffy said at the time that he “welcomes the defense secretary’s decision to suspend the collections efforts, but that the decision doesn’t go deep enough. A comprehensive program needs to be immediately created to help make these Guard members whole again. They signed and fulfilled a contract, and whether they were authorized to receive a bonus is the fault of a system, not of any recipient. Aside from stopping collection, the government should also restore those monies already collected.” Earlier this week, DOD Secretary Ash Carter ordered the repayment of those bonuses that had been collected. DOD is also tasked with exploring ways to assist those veterans who may have gone into debt or lost their homes because of the recoupment of their bonuses.
That’s why VFW members from across the nation will take the voice of all veterans to Capitol Hill February 26 – March 2, during our annual VFW Legislative Conference. Continue reading
