John L. Fredrickson 1946-2014 Past District 9 Commander John L. Fredrickson passed away on Monday, February 10, 2014. He was 67 years old. John served as District 9 Commander from 2007 to 2009 and also served as Commander of Rice Lake Post 2204. John was also an active member of the DAV and served as State Commander during 2012-2013. He was well liked by everyone who served with him. A visitation will be held at Appleyard’s home for Funerals in Rice Lake on Saturday, February 15th and a church service will be held on Sunday, February 16th at the Maranatha Evangelical Free Church also in Rice Lake. The first Christmas at the new Veterans Home at Chippewa Falls and for the residents there was made a little brighter by VFW of Wisconsin District 9. In October, the home’s Recreation Committee asked the resident committee members if they would like one Christmas party or several sponsored by the various organizations that comprise the Recreation Committee. Surprise! They decided to fit as many parties in as possible during the weeks before Christmas. Past District Commander Pete Breed volunteered to organize the District 9 event for Friday, December 6th and requested that District 9 Posts and Auxiliaries donate funds to the District earmarked for this special event. Eventually, 13 Posts and 11 Auxiliaries made donations totaling $2,065. This amount worked out fine since we planned to give each of the 72 residents a $20 gift card to use at Walmart as well as sponsor refreshments for residents and guests. All Posts in Wisconsin’s VFW 9th District should be attending the spring convention on Saturday, April 20, 2013. This spring the event is hosted by Almena Post 8512 and its Auxiliary in Almena, Wisconsin. Lunch will be served at St. Matthews Church following a memorial service for our departed comrades. Registration begins at 0900 hours for both the VFW and Auxiliary. However, the groups are meeting at separate locations. Commander Pete Breed has released the 2012-2013 District meeting schedule. These meetings are scheduled in advance to allow department HQ to assign representatives to attend. The fall meeting includes a School of Instruction. The winter meeting is largely a business meeting and includes the nomination of officers for 2013-2014. Our Spring meeting includes a memorial service and the election of officers.
