The first Christmas at the new Veterans Home at Chippewa Falls and for the residents there was made a little brighter by VFW of Wisconsin District 9. In October, the home’s Recreation Committee asked the resident committee members if they would like one Christmas party or several sponsored by the various organizations that comprise the Recreation Committee. Surprise! They decided to fit as many parties in as possible during the weeks before Christmas.

Past District Commander Pete Breed volunteered to organize the District 9 event for Friday, December 6th and requested that District 9 Posts and Auxiliaries donate funds to the District earmarked for this special event. Eventually, 13 Posts and 11 Auxiliaries made donations totaling $2,065. This amount worked out fine since we planned to give each of the 72 residents a $20 gift card to use at Walmart as well as sponsor refreshments for residents and guests. In addition to the cash donations, Eau Claire Post 305 provided broasted chicken wings and Union Post 7232 provided meat and cheese trays. Pete and his wife Marge went shopping at Walmart for the remaining groceries, soda and beer for the party and in the process Pete managed to get the store manager to donate a $50 gift card to use toward our purchases.

The party went extremely well and we even got Santa Claus visit with the veterans and spouses at the party. Everyone enjoyed the food including ice cream cake for desert. Needless to say, most resident attendees probably skipped their regular supper that was served a little later on. In addition, it was a training weekend for members of the 829th Eng. Co., located at the National Guard Armory adjacent to the Veterans Home property, and about ten soldiers from that unit found time to visit with residents during the party. These guard members will be deployed to Afghanistan this spring to help dismantle US bases there and the Veterans at the home enjoyed visiting with them.

District Commander Leroy Jansky wishes to thank the Lake Hallie Walmart store and Posts and Auxiliaries of the 9th District for their donations and support.
