After years of trying to collect reenlistment bonuses from California National Guard members and mounting pressure from the VFW, Congress and other VSOs, the Department of Defense (DOD) suspended its collection efforts in October of 2016. VFW National Commander Brian Duffy said at the time that he “welcomes the defense secretary’s decision to suspend the collections efforts, but that the decision doesn’t go deep enough. A comprehensive program needs to be immediately created to help make these Guard members whole again. They signed and fulfilled a contract, and whether they were authorized to receive a bonus is the fault of a system, not of any recipient. Aside from stopping collection, the government should also restore those monies already collected.” Earlier this week, DOD Secretary Ash Carter ordered the repayment of those bonuses that had been collected. DOD is also tasked with exploring ways to assist those veterans who may have gone into debt or lost their homes because of the recoupment of their bonuses.

FEBRUARY 2017- NEWSLETTER Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519, It has been two months since our last newsletter. In December we had our Christmas Party which we talked about in the December newsletter. Since then there has not been a lot of VFW business to report on. As of this writing our winter has been a roller coaster , a harsh December and mild January. I hope everyone is dealing with the challenges of winter reasonably well. We have had a lot of members dealing with health issues in the last couple of months, from serious to normal colds and flu. Most everyone is recuperating at home. Bob Kennedy is the exception, Bob is recovering from a complete ankle replacement. Get well wishes go to all our Post members that are dealing with health concerns. On December 17th the WREATHS ACCROSS AMERICA ceremony at Wood’s National Cemetery took place. Normally an event well attended by Post members. Greetings Brothers and Sisters of VFWA 10519, By the time you receive this newsletter we will be looking back at January, realizing we are half way through our Auxiliary year of 2016-2017. All donations have been made, and as of November 30th, we are 100% in membership. We do not stop now. RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT! The 2017-2018 will be upon us soon. Comrades, please remember not only are your wives and daughters eligible, but also sons and grandsons. A heartfelt thank you all, your membership is important to the success of our Auxiliary. As of January 1st, life membership fees have increased. If you have any membership applications on hand, please toss them out. Only new forms are to be used.
