MAY- 2019- NEWSLETTER
Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519;
Welcome to Spring, I have been told it’s coming. Get well wishes go out Chuck Belendorf who was injured in auto accident and is convalescing at home. I don’t know of any hospitalizations but a lot of our older and some not so older members are dealing with health issues. Get well to all.
There are a lot of things going on in May. Number one is POPPIES which as you all know is our main source of funding for the Post. We had the first of two Miller Park Poppy opportunities on April 15th. It was cold and uncomfortable but Post members and Auxiliary members responded well to the call for help. We had 14 participants (8 Post members & 6 Auxiliary members). We did well for a cold Monday-THANKS TO ALL. Our next Poppy opportunity is our main event the Community Poppy Drive on May 10th and the 11th. We ask those who can to put in two to four hour shifts at the locations where we have been given permission to be. We have the Pick n Save on 76 and Cold Spring, three Speedway’s, 76th and Grange, 60th and Layton and 60th and Cold Spring, we also have Associated Bank (that schedule is full) on 76th St and we are working on the Pick n Save on 76th and Rawson. Chairs are available for those who prefer to sit. We start the day at 9 am and finish around five. I started signing people up at the April meeting but we still have many openings. Please consider helping out. You can contact me any time to get on the schedule, if helping is not possible consider a donation to the Poppy fund. We have received several donations already. All money from Poppies goes directly to Veterans and local Veteran organizations. We also have another opportunity for Poppy distribution at Iron Town Harley Davidson dealership in New Berlin. There is a SUPPORT THE TROOPS RIDE staging and leaving the dealership on March 18th. There is a pancake breakfast and the ride leaves at 11am. That allows about three hours to solicit donations. I think four to five members can cover that time well.
ALSO in May on Saturday the 18th is the long awaited ground breaking for the GREENDALE VETERANS MEMORIAL- 10 am at the site. Should that date change I will get out a separate e-mail.
ALSO in May on Monday the 27th is the VILLAGE OF GREEENDALE MEMORIAL DAY PARADE. The parade steps off at 9:00 am followed by a Memorial day program at the high School. The Greendale Legion 416 will have a Pancake breakfast from 8:00 am to noon.. The Post Color Guard will lead off the parade, Post and retire the Colors at the High School. I hope you all can attend.
ALSO in May The VIETNAM MOVING WALL is coming to Greenfield. It will be on display 24 hours from May 23rd at 2 pm to May 27th at 4 pm. It will be at Konkel Park on 51st and Layton.
ALSO in May we will have the Post and Auxiliary INSTALLATION CEREMONY and dinner on Thursday May 23rd. Cocktail are at 5:30 , dinner at 6:30 with the ceremony to follow. The cost is $20.00 per person and I need an RSVP by May 13th. See the attached flyer and form for more information.
Nancy and I attended the VFW LOYALTY DAY parade and program in Freedom Wisconsin on April 27th. The entire town was involved and it was a very memorable day. There is talk of next year’s Loyalty Day parade and program may be in Wauwatosa. This would give the Post and auxiliary an opportunity to support and participate in this event.
I was recently informed that at this time there would NOT be Veterans Day parade in downtown Milwaukee in November. There will still be a program at the War Memorial but not a parade. I will keep you informed as more information becomes available.
