POST 10519

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519

There are a lot of things going on starting in April through the end of summer. First up on April 15th is our first of two Poppy distribution fund raisers at Miller Park. The Brewers organization has been kind enough to give us a couple of games this season. We have a Cubs game coming up in August which should be a very good fund raiser for the Post, provided we get the volunteers. But before the Cubs in August we have the date of April 15th to deal with, a night game on a Monday. April weather can be just about anything so we are looking for our younger members to step up for this date. I would expect the evening to be cold. We are meeting at the Post and car pooling to the stadium, we are leaving at4:30, arriving around five. The game starts at 6:40. If the weather is exceptionally cold or rainy we will adjust the times. Please let me know if you can make it.

At the March meeting we had nomination of Officers for upcoming 2019-2020 VFW year. The March nominations will stay open for further nominations at this month’s April meeting, on the 22nd (fourth Monday) at which time the nominations will be closed and the election held. All elected position have a nominee at this time but nominations are still open. The installation of Officers ceremony and dinner will be on Thursday May 23rd. The cost is $20.00 per person. You can sign up at the April meeting or contact me. Our normal meeting on the fourth Monday of May falls on Memorial Day. Originally we had planned the third Monday of the Month (May 20th) for the installation. But due to scheduling conflict it is has been scheduled for Thursday May 23rd to include the installation and catered dinner. The final information will be in the May newsletter.

Besides the installation dinner near the end of the month we will have our Community Poppy drive on Friday May 10th and Saturday 11th. This is our main fund raiser. I can’t stress enough the importance this event is to the Post. We ask those who can to put in two to four hour shifts at the locations where we have been given permission to be. We have the Pick n Save on 76 and Cold Spring, three Speedway’s 76th and grange, 60th and Layton and 60th and Cold Spring, we also have Associated Bank on 76th St. Chairs are available for those who prefer to sit. We start the day at 9 am and finish around four. I will have signup sheets at the April meeting or you can contact me any time to get on the schedule. Please consider helping out, if that is not possible consider a donation to the Poppy fund. All money from Poppies goes directly to Veterans and local Veteran organizations.

Another event for April is 2019 VFW WISCONSIN LOAYALTY DAYS CELEBRATION IN FREEDOM, WI ON APRIL 27TH. The parade begins 10: 30 am and the program begins at 1 pm. There is more information on the VFW State web site and the VFW Newspaper.

Looking ahead to May, The VIETNAM MOVING WALL is coming to Greenfield. It will be on display 24 hours from May 23rd at 2 pm to May 27th at 4 pm. It will be at Konkel Park on 51st and Layton.

THE VFW STATE OF WISCONSIN is doing another limited cash raffle. A ticket is S20.00 which sounds high but there are only 6,000 ticket available and the payout is a generous $17,000.00 among 17 winners. The top prize is $5,000.00. I will have tickets available at the Post meetings in March, April and May. (Drawing June 27th).

I would expect the next few months to be active. We have the Memorial Day Parade and Program, 4th of July Parade. The already mentioned Viet Nam wall and Brewers games. And at a date to be determined a Greendale Veterans Memorial ground breaking and possible dedication at the end of summer.

The Post was contacted by Woods of Cedar Village on 33rd and College regarding a World War II veteran of the facility that is turning 100 years old. Post members where invited to offer Birthday wishes and offer thanks for his service, this happened the evening of March 29th. It was a nice event, besides myself, attendees were Bill Pekrul, Bob Karwowski, Ken Kieck, Don Furdek and Dan (Sarge) Conatty.

The Post has an e-mail address, it is GREENDALEVFW@GMAIL.COM.The Post’s web site is us out on FACEBOOK.

Our next regular Post meeting will be APRIL 22ND, 2019 at our regular start time of 6:30 pm.
