AUGUST- 2019- NEWSLETTER
Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519;
Sad to say we are in our final summer month. I wish winters went by as fast as summer. I have not been informed of any member hospitalized at this time. I would like to welcome new transfer member Vigil Warner. There are several prospective new members in the works and hopefully we can get them signed up in the near future.
On Saturday August 3rd there was a fund raiser for Lily, the granddaughter of member Dan (Sarge) and Linda Conatty at the American legion Post 434 in Oak Creek. Lily was struck by a car in Septembers of 2018. Lily suffered traumatic brain injuries that has changed her life forever. Many members attended the event and showed their support with monetary contributions and several members donated items for the silent auctions. Although this is not a veteran’s event the Post is showing its support for Dan and Linda at this difficult time. If you were unable to attend event but would like show your monetary support for Lily you can send a check to the Post earmarked for Lily.
On September 6th we will have our last Miller Park Poppy distribution and last big fund raiser for the Post this year. It’s time to think about this and make plans to help out. This is a Friday night game against the Cubs, I would expect a sellout. It is a fun and entertaining time. Put it on your calendar if you are able to help. I will have more information at the August Post meeting on the 26th. If you can’t make the meeting but want to be involved call me for details.
Have you driven by the site of the GREENDALE VETERANS MEMORIAL lately? Please do, it is coming along very well. There is not a dedication date yet but I would think that will be set soon. I will share any information as I get it.
On June 17th Post members Bill Pekrul, Bob Karwowski, Dan Conatty, Dan Crass, Tim Bellis and myself attend the funeral of fellow Veteran Jim Winkleski.Jim was a Navy Veteran and Auxiliary member. Tim Bellis and Bill Pekrul did the flag folding and Dan Crass presented the flag to Jim’s wife Joan. Our condolences go out to the family.

We also received a CITATION OF REGOGNITION for outstanding participation in our VOICE OF DEMOCRACY PROGRAM for 2018-2019. These awards are issued by the Department of Wisconsin VFW. The success of these two programs are due to Auxiliary member Amanda Patterson.She has done an outstanding job for many years in running these programs. Thanks Amanda.
There are a lot of free and discounted events happening in the Milwaukee area for veterans. Too numerous to mention here. If you have access to a computer or know someone who does there are a lot of things going on. The Brewers offer free Sunday home game tickets to Veterans, State fair has a FREE Veterans admission on the last Sunday of the fair. Many of the local festivals have discounts and many local store and restaurants offer veteran discounts.
Once again, this year the Post will have available Raffle Calendars for 2020. The proceeds from this fund raiser goes to support the VFW Regional Office at the VA grounds. There are daily drawings and special drawings, prizes total $33,500.00 and it is a nicelooking Calendar. We will be selling them until early December for $20.00 (they make nice gifts also).
