Newsletter February, 2019

POST 10519

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,

This is the first newsletter of 2019, we don’t have a regular meeting in December. The Christmas Party is considered our meeting. With not having a regular meeting and the Holiday’s there usually is very little VFW news to report and so no reason for a January newsletter.

Speaking of the Christmas Party, it was well attended with 76 members and friends. The food was very good as well as the adult beverages. Seemed like a good time was had by all. See the attached Auxiliary Newsletter for more information on the Christmas Party.

I don’t need to tell you about January’s up and down weather. Unfortunately a severe weather situation occurred the same day as our scheduled meeting. The Officers got together (by phone) and we decided to cancel the meeting due to the heavy snow. Pretty much the whole County was shutting down, there was no reason to put our members in harm’s way. This is the first time in my time here at the Post (over ten years) that we had to cancel a meeting. Because January is a slow time of the VFW year the meeting was canceled rather than postponed to another date.

I am happy to report no new known hospitalizations at this time. Get well wishes go out to all who are dealing with health issues. I also have no new members or transfers to report.

Many Post members attended the December 15th WREATHS ACCROSS AMERICA ceremony at the VA National Cemetery. It was a good weather day and well attended. I submitted an article in regards to the event along with some pictures to the VFW Newspaper editor. An article was published in the last VFW State newsletter. Also in the paper was a letter to the editor submitted by Post member Don Furdek.

Thanks to all who volunteered to participate in our Boat Show Fund raiser. A special thanks to Mike Pekrul, owner of MW Marine for giving us the space, an opportunity to raise money through poppy distribution at the show. And special thanks to Bill Pekrul for organizing and setting things up as well as working multiple shifts, both scheduled and unscheduled. Also thanks to those who worked the event, many doing multiple shifts, the volunteers are; BOB KARWOWSKI (2 shifts), KEN KIECK (3 shifts), DAN CONNATTY (2 shifts), DAN CRASS (1 shift) JOHN USTRUCK (2 shifts), ZACH MAYO (1 shift) AND KRISTIN DODDS (1 shift). There were weather issues both weekends which may have affected the crowd size but over all we did well, I will have the final totals at the February meeting.

At our November Post meeting on November 26th we had our annual Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy presentations and awards. One of our winners also won at the District level and moved to the State competition where she finished fifth overall. Please read the details in the attached Auxiliary Newsletter for more information. I hope you can attend the Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy presentations and awards at the District meeting. You are welcome to stay for the 4th District meeting following the awards presentations but it is not necessary. See the Auxiliary Newsletter for date and time.

Dan Crass is putting together a program for the coming 2019 year that will address in helping out Post members in need. It will be aimed at getting information to members unable to attend meetings and help with veterans benefits and also help with day to day issues. The program is not complete but look for more information in 2019 as it comes together.

The Post was informed that there would not be a Village Day parade this year. We will be marching in the Memorial Day parade, 4th of July parade and Greendale Veterans Day parade if there is one. We will also be marching in the downtown Veteran’s Day Parade in Milwaukee, again if there is one.

This past week-end Nancy and I attended the Wisconsin VFW Mid-Winter Conference in Wisconsin Dells. Also attending were Post and Auxiliary members Tim and Carla Bellis. VFW Mid-Winter Conference is a two day event consisting of meetings, training classes, new information regarding the VFW and closes with a banquet honoring outstanding achievement by Posts or individuals. Our post received a RED CARPET AWARD for outstanding membership achievement. Besides the RED CARPET treatment at the banquet we received a plaque recognizing our membership achievement.

Next month I hope to have more to report regarding the progress of the Veterans Memorial. Yes there is some progress.
