Newsletter July, 2019

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519;

I hope all our members are having a healthy and enjoyable summer. Seems like we missed spring this year and went from furnace to air conditioning in a very short time. I don’t know of any hospitalizations at this time. For those dealing with health issues we wish you the best, get well soon.

The last newsletter was in May, we normally don’t do a newsletter in June or January. May was a busy month. Number one was the POPPY fund raisers. Our main event was the Community Poppy Drive on May 10th and the 11th. We didn’t set any records but we did well. As always, I report the numbers at our monthly meeting. Thanks to all that participated and especially those who did multiple shifts. I would also like to thank those who were unable to volunteer time and labor but gave donations to the Poppy Fund to support our veteran programs. All money from Poppy donations goes directly to Veterans and local Veteran organizations. We also had another opportunity for Poppy distribution at the Iron Town Harley Davidson dealership in New Berlin. There was a SUPPORT THE TROOPS RIDE. The weather was not good but we appreciated the opportunity to be there. Thanks to TJ Oman for setting it up and for volunteers Bob Karwowski, Dan (Sarge) Conatty and Mike Kieck for their time at the event.

On Saturday the 18th the long awaited ground breaking for the GREENDALE VETERANS MEMORIAL took place at the site. Again, the weather was not great but the attendance was very good and we got air time from the local news stations, it was covered well. I will let you know when the dedication is planned and any further updates.

Also, in May we marched in the MEMORIAL DAY PARADE. The Post Color Guard led off the parade and retired the Colors at the High School. The Greendale Legion 416 Pancake breakfast followed.

Also, in May the VIETNAM MOVING WALL was at Konkel Park on May 23rd to May 27th.

On May 23rd we had our Post and Auxiliary Installation of Officers Ceremony and dinner. It was well attended by 52 members, spouses and friends.

The Post Color Guard marched in the Greendale 4th of July parade. The members do a great job in representing the Post and VFW organization. This year there will NOT be a Village Day parade.

At the June meeting the 2019-2020 Budget was presented to the members and approved. July 1st starts the fiscal year for the Posts, District and State VFW’s.

On Saturday August 3rd (see attachment) there will be a fund raiser for Lily, the granddaughter of member Dan (Sarge) and Linda Conatty at the American legion Post 434 in Oak Creek. Lily was struck by a car in Septembers of 2018. Lily suffered traumatic brain injuries that has changed her life forever. Although this is not a veteran’s event the Post is showing its support for Dan and Linda at this difficult time, both are active members of the post and auxiliary. If you can’t make the event but would like show your monetary support you can send a check to the Post earmarked for Lily.

On September 6th we will have our last Miller Park Poppy distribution and last big fund raiser for the Post. It’s not too early to think about this and make plans to help out. This is a Friday game against the Cubs, I would expect a sell out and probably playoff implications. Recently another Veterans organization did a sold-out Cubs game. They had a lot of volunteers and made a boat load of money. We want to do the same but it will take a good turnout of volunteers. Cubs fans are the best in giving freely and generously, we need people there to gladly take their money. It is a fun and entertaining time. Put it on your calendar if you are able to help. At the last Miller Park fund raiser, we had two Post members in their nineties, it’s not difficult.

The Post has an e-mail address, it is GREENDALEVFW@GMAIL.COM. The Post’s web site is Check us out on FACEBOOK.

Once again, this year the Post will have available Raffle Calendars for 2020. The proceeds from this fund raiser goes to support the VFW Regional Office at the VA grounds. The VFW Regional Office works vigorously to obtain Veterans benefit. The Wisconsin Regional Office is one of the top three in the Nation, they secure many benefit dollars for Wisconsin Veterans. There are daily drawings and special drawings, prizes total $33,500.00 and it ‘s nice looking Calendar. We will be selling them until early December.

Our next regular Post meeting will be July 22nd, 2019 at our regular start time of 6:30 pm.
