NOVEMBER-2016- NEWSLETTER

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,

The autumn season is winding down and now we begin our transition into winter. Not a good thought for many of us. It is with a heavy heart that I have to report to you the passing of Ralph Steffens. Ralph passed away at the Union Grove Veterans Home on October 20th. Ralph was laid to rest on November 3rd, 2016 at 1 pm with full Military Honors at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove.. Several Post members, Auxiliary President and I attended to pay final respects. Ralph volunteered at the VA in the Veteran Volunteer Services. Ralph had endured many health issues for many years, rest in peace.

We would like acknowledge and welcome two VFW transfer members to our Post, Art Olszewski and Terry Finger. Nancy and I have known both of these Veterans for a long time and are happy to welcome them to the Post.

November 5th is the Milwaukee Veterans Day Parade in downtown Milwaukee. Our Color Guard has a full complement of marchers and we look forward to this parade every year. The weather is not always favorable and the spectator turnout is not always good but it is a special day to all the Veterans who watch the parade and those that participate.

If you missed the Veterans Day parade downtown then you will be happy to hear that Greendale will be putting on a two day event to honor veterans here in the Village. It will begin Friday November 11th. The Greendale Library will be hosting a program to honor those who served. Visit the library web site for more information. On Saturday November 12th at 9 am there will be a parade from the Village Hall to the proposed Greendale Veterans Memorial site. There will be a short ceremony at the site. This is the first year for a Veterans Day event in the Village. Come and show your support as a spectator or parade participant. All are welcome to show support. Hopefully this can turn into an annual event.

On November 28th at our monthly Post and Auxiliary meeting we will have the Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy presentations. This is a an excellent program administered by past Auxiliary President Amanda Patterson. Hearing the winning essays read by the students is a very moving experience. See the Auxiliary newsletter for more information. I hope you can join us and support these patriotic students and their families.

The last big event for this calendar year will be our annual Christmas Dinner on Saturday December 3rd. The cost is the same as last year at $15.00 per person. You can sign up at the next Post and Auxiliary meeting or you can send in your reservation to us by 11-28-2016. There is more information in the Auxiliary newsletter. An announcement and reservation information is attached.

The Post had put in a request to the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball organization to solicit donations for Poppies during the 2017 baseball season at Miller park. The Brewers responded giving us two dates, one in May and one in July. There will be more information as we get closer to those dates.

Veterans having difficulty keeping air conditioning or heat due to financial problems, call Heat for Heroes, 1-800-891-9276 for possible help.  This is a Keep Wisconsin Warm/Cool Initiative

2017 Raffle Calendars will be available for the last time at our next monthly meeting on November 28th. The cost is $20.00 for a year of daily drawings. If you would like one but can’t make the meeting call me and we will make arrangements to get your calendars.

If you know of any Post member that is ill or in need of any type of support or other assistance please let me know. Let us know if you have an address change or if you no longer want a newsletter mailed but would prefer to get it electronically.
