Newsletter November, 2017

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,

I am happy to report that I have not been notified of any Post member hospitalized. I regrettably have no new members to report or transfers this month.

The Milwaukee brewers organization had been contacted for dates for next year’s Poppy distribution. They have responded with two dates, August 7th and August 8th. They are not premium dates and they are mid week games. Not what we wanted but at least we have two dates, some Posts got turned down. More on this as we get near our Poppy season.

On November 3rd the annual MILITARY AND VETERANS BALL was held at the Milwaukee Hilton. Post Jr. Vice commander Zach Mayo was involved in the preparation of the event. He invited as special guests two Post member, Bill Pekrul representing the World War II veterans and Harold Kuehnnel representing the Korean War veterans. Bill was accompanied by his daughter and Harold was accompanied by his wife Pauline. The feedback I got back was that it was an incredible evening. Thanks Zach for helping put this together and recognizing two of our well deserving Post members

The post Honor Guard marched in the Veteran’s Day parade in downtown Milwaukee on November 4th. It was cold and windy and the attendance was low due to the conditions. Thanks to the marchers Ken Kieck, Tim Bellis Dan Crass, Zach Mayo, Bob Karwowski, John Ustruck and thanks to Dan “Sarg” Connatty for leading us. Bill Pekrul followed in a car driven by his grandson.

Also on November 4th Post member Don Furdek, Viet Nam veteran participated in the HONOR FLIGHT to Washington. He was accompanied by his daughter. It is a well deserved honor to Don and all the veterans who participated.

Our October Post meeting was attended by our current State of Wisconsin VFW Commander John “Trapper” Schulz. He spoke on many different aspects of the VFW including recent changes, membership and proper VFW protocol. He commented positively about our meeting and how the members conduct themselves.

Post members have been invited to the WISCONSIN 951ST AIR FORCE JUNIOR ROTC Veterans Day program at Greenfield High School. It will be on Friday November 10th at 2pm at the High school. All veterans are welcomed (as well as non-veterans). Let me know if you are planning on attending as they would like a general head count.

On November 27th at our monthly Post and Auxiliary meeting we will have the Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy presentations. This is a an excellent program administered by past Auxiliary President Amanda Patterson. Hearing the winning essays read by the students is a very moving experience. I hope you can join us and support these patriotic students and their families.

The Post Christmas Party will be on December 16th. See the attached flyer for more information. The cost is $20.00 per person. The event is catered by Daniel’s catering and we are planning a menu similar to last years. It is a nice social gathering. Hope to see you there.

Veterans having difficulty keeping the heat on due to financial problems, call Heat for Heroes, 1-800-891-9276 for possible help.  This is a Keep Wisconsin Warm/Cool Initiative

2018 Raffle Calendars are still available. The last opportunity to purchase one will be at our November Post meeting. They cost $20.00. If you would like one but can’t make the meeting call me and we will make arrangements to get you your calendars, I will be turning in the money in early December.

Also see the attached flyer for more information on the Veteran’s Day activities and parade in the Village on November 10th an 11th. Post members Frank Jennik and Bob Birmingham will be awarded QUILTS OF HONOR at the Library program on Friday November 10th at 6:30 pm.
