Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR. This is a busy time of year for everyone and the Post is no exception. First I am happy to report that I am not aware of any member hospitalized. Keeping with the good news we would like to welcome a new transfer member, Andy Gleason. Andy served in both the Air Force and Army. Andy was also present at our last Post meeting. Welcome.
For those of you who were not able to attend our November meeting we hosted the three winners of the Voice of Democracy Essay contest and their families along with the six Honorable Mention participants and their families. We also had an award presentation to the winner of 2017 Creative Patriotic Art award contest. The Auxiliary sponsored Kayla Juds who submitted an outstanding oil painting that won first place in the VFW State competition and went on to National competition. The picture is on display at the Post for anyone interested in seeing it. It was a great event, we had a packed room and we were able to have some social time with the students and their families after the awards. It is great to see these young people honoring the Veterans and showing great patriotism and love of Country. A special thanks to Mrs. Amanda Patterson for all the work she puts into the Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen essay competitions. Mandy has done a fantastic job chairing this program for well over a decade. Many Many Thanks Mandy.
Coming up next on December 16th is the WREATHS ACCROSS AMERICA ceremony at Wood’s National Cemetery. Wreaths Across America, a nationwide program which distributes holiday wreaths as a tribute to Veterans laid to rest at VA national cemeteries and state Veterans cemeteries. It is a nice program that we donate to and participate in yearly, beside the Patriotic ceremony there will be the laying of wreaths at various grave sites. If you would like to join us we will meet at the Post at 10 am on the 16th and carpool to the Cemetery. The program starts at 11:00 am and last less than an hour. Dress according to the weather, it is an outside event on top of a hill at Woods Cemetery, in the past we’ve had some cold days as well as snow.
Next in December is The Post Christmas Party on December 16th. We have over 70 people signed up as of this writing. The cutoff date is December 6th but if you can contact me before December 9th we could fit you in. The caterer needs a head count on the 10th. The cost is $20.00 per person. The event is catered by Daniel’s Catering. It is a nice social gathering. Hope to see you there.
Veterans having difficulty keeping the heat on due to financial problems, call Heat for Heroes, 1-800-891-9276 for possible help. This is a Keep Wisconsin Warm/Cool Initiative
2018 Raffle Calendars are still available. December 15th is the last day of calendar sales. Contact me if you are interested. They cost $20.00.
If you know of any Post member that is ill or in need of any type of support or other assistance please let me know.
Coming up in January is the annual Boat Show at the Expo Center in West Allis. Member Bill Pekrul’s son owns MW Marine in Hales Corners and each year he gives us space to set up a table to distribute Poppies to raise funds for the Post. If you are able to help out with this fund raiser let me know and we can get you scheduled and set up with a pass to the Boat Show. We schedule two person teams.
We mail out about a hundred newsletters a month. We send out about 40 electronically. The cost of postage is going up and along with the cost of envelopes, printing, and the labels it is a growing monthly expense for the Post, as well as time consuming to put it all together. Of the hundred that are mailed out I have to believe that many of these members have e-mail or have access to e-mail through a friend or relative. Please contact me at email@example.com to get signed up for the monthly newsletter.
The Post has an e-mail address, it is GREENDALEVFW@GMAIL.COM.
