POST 10519

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,

The summer months of June, July and August are gone. We can now change our attention to the Fall months. Since our last newsletter we did not sign up any new members to the VFW however we did welcome three transfer members to the Post. A big welcome to James Bergmann of Franklin, Andrew Gleason of Milwaukee and Tom Schultz of Greendale. I am also happy to report that there not any member hospitalized (that I am aware of). If you know of any member hospitalized or in need of help please let me know.

During the last three summer months the Post had its final two fund raisers for the year at Miller Park. We did a Friday June 30th game that was cold and rainy, in spite of a good turnout of volunteers we did not do well. We also did a Friday game on July 14th, the weather was perfect and it was a sellout. We did fairly well in spite of not having enough volunteers, we could have done better. Thanks to all who participated. We will be putting in a request shortly for next year’s Brewers season, hopefully we can get some quality dates.

Also during the summer months the Post’s Honor Guard led the Fourth of July parade in Greendale and the Village Days parade on August 13th. The color Guard also did a Flag presentation at the grand opening of the Greendale Fire Department’s new building on July 22nd. Thanks to all the Color Guard members who participated in those events. Our Color guard participation has been very good. Thanks to all the Post members and Auxiliary members. Our last marching opportunities for this year will be at the Veteran’s Day Parade in downtown Milwaukee on November 4th and the Greendale Veterans day event (a date has not been announced). Speaking of the Veterans Day Parade, on November 4th there will be a KICKOFF PARTY put on by the HONOR OUR MILITARY parade committee on September 23rd and 24th at the Honor our Military office at 300 E. College, it is an open house event and goes from noon to 4pm each day. A group of Post members will be meeting on September 23rd at noon to car pool down to the event. We usually stay about an hour, all are welcome just be at the post by noon or you can go on your own.

On August 26th there was Greendale Veterans Memorial fund raiser held at the Greendale Hose Tower. It was a limited screening of a documentary called ALMOST SUNRISE, about two Iraq veterans who walked from Milwaukee to Los Angles. The program was a presentation of the documentary and a question and answers. The documentary and discussion was to bring more awareness about PTSD and other veteran mental health issues. The program was arranged and emceed by Post member Kristin Dodds with the help of Ken Kieck and Tim Baranzyk. It was well done and well attended. Thanks Kristen.

Veterans having difficulty keeping air conditioning or heat due to financial problems, call Heat for Heroes, 1-800-891-9276 for possible help.  This is a Keep Wisconsin Warm/Cool Initiative

On November 3rd there will be the annual MILITARY AND VETERANS BALL. It is held at the Milwaukee Hilton. If interested there is more information available calling 414-229-7211 or contacting

2018 Raffle Calendars are now available. We will have them until early December and are available at the Post meeting for $20.00. If you would like one but can’t make the meeting call me and we will make arrangements to get your calendars.

Auxiliary President Nancy and I attended “King Day” on August 19th, at the Veterans Home in King Wisconsin. We presented a check on behalf of the Post, the donation will go to the King Recreation department.
