POST 10519

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,

Welcome to September, meteorological summer has ended and the fall season has started and we all know what follows that. I have no new hospitalizations to report. Get well wishes go out to all who are dealing with health issues. On a sad note we had to say goodbye to Dan Raush, a long time Post member who passed away in July.

As for membership we have done well as a Post. I would like to welcome Curt Crowdis a Greenfield resident and Navy Veteran and Steven Sheffieck, also a Greenfield resident and an Army veteran. Both attended our last meeting and were voted in. Welcome to the Post. I also have two other applications, one from the VFW Regional Office and one who was recruited at the St Marten’s fair this past weekend. I will be contacting them to finalize their memberships. Membership is ongoing, talk us up and keep pushing to add members, it is vital to the future of the VFW.

On August 7th and 8th the Post did Poppy distribution at Miller Park. This year we did not have premium games. We also didn’t have as many volunteers as we once had. Those things considered we did not do all that well this year. The May community Poppy drive and Miller Park are our main fund raisers, both were down due to lack of volunteers. Thank You to those who did participate. I would also like to thank Bob Birmingham who has been distributing Poppies at his son’s coffee shop in down town Greendale on several occasions. I would like to thank Bob Karwowski for soliciting Poppy donations at the House of Harley 115th celebration this passed Labor Day weekend.

The Color Guard participated in the Greendale 4th of July Parade and Village Day Parade. We had a good turnout of marchers for both events. Thanks to all who participated. We looked good!

The Greendale Veteran’s memorial project is reaching its final stage. The plans are in the hands of the City. As things sort out in the next few months we should have an idea on the ground breaking and proposed completion dates. I will keep you up to date as I get information.

There will be a Vietnam Veteran event on September 12th at the Milwaukee War Memorial, starting at 9:00 am. Refreshments will be available at 8:30. The ceremony will last about one hour. The veterans in attendance must have served between 19955-1975 in any capacity. The recipients will also be given a presidential proclamation with a lapel pin from the national commemoration society.

On Saturday September 22nd, Honor Our Military, the ones who put on the Veterans Day Parade in downtown Milwaukee in November is hosting the parade kickoff party. This event will be at the Mitchell Field office. Anyone wishing to attend should meet at the Post on Saturday, September 22nd at noon and we will car pool down to the location.

Auxiliary President Nancy and I attended “King Day” on August 18th, at the Veterans Home in King Wisconsin. We presented a check on behalf of the Post and Auxiliary, the donation will go to the King Recreation department.

During this first week of September the Post had its annual inspection. A representative from the 4th District conducts the inspection. They check for all kinds of paper work, audits, bank statements, fund balances, activity reports and other required reports. As usual we passed but a special thanks needs to go out to our Quartermaster Ken Kieck who puts those things together and is responsible for those reports and audits. Ken does a fantastic job keeping our books and all the required reporting. He does not get enough credit for all he does.
