POST 10519

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519;

September is here, fall has arrived and summer is over. Fall is a nice season but we all know what follows. I have not been informed of any member hospitalized at this time. On behalf of the Post I would like tooffer our support and condolences to member Art Olszewski on the passing of his wife Darlene. Nancy and I knew Darlene and attended her funeral on August 21st, a very fine lady.

On September 6th we had our last Miller Park Poppy distribution and last big fund raiser for the Post this year. Expectation were high, it was a Friday night game against the Cubs, a near a sellout, the weather was good and there were playoff implications. What should have been a big money maker for the Post was a bust due to lack of volunteers. Special thanks to the six Post members, four Auxiliary members and guest who did participate. Those who showed did well. Thanks to Bill Pekrul, Bob Karwowski, Tom Schultz, Dan Crass Don Furdek, his son Tim and myself. Of the six Post members two are in their ninety’s and one in his mid-eighties. The Auxiliary members were Ellen Crass, Sarah Berg, Jody Hahn and Nancy Ustruck.

Have you driven by the site of the GREENDALE VETERANS MEMORIAL lately? For the most part it is complete. It looks great, well done to all who made it possible. Many bricks and pavers are down. The most recently ordered bricks and pavers are in the works. Dedication as of this writing is undecided, it may be in early October or delayed until next year. Grass has been planted and it would be nearly impossible to keep people from walking on it. I will pass on any new information as I get it.

Post member and retired Greenfield Alderman Don Almquist will be honored with a park named in his honor in Greenfield. The dedication will be Thursday, September 12th at the park, 4425 S. Honey Creek Drive. Many Post members and Auxiliary members plan on attending to show support for Don. We will be meeting at the Post at 5:30 on the 12th and leaving shortly after that. Or you can go directly to the park. See the attached flyer.

Post member TJ Oman organizes a Police escorted motorcycle event called the VIPER RIDE. Blind Veterans are treated to a day of honor including the motorcycle ride, socializing and food and beverages.It has been a yearly event. This year TJ asked the Post and Legion 416 honor guards to present the Colors during the ride. We presented the colors at the VA grounds Cemetery. The VFW was on one side the Legion on the other. Early indications are that we will have an article and pictures in the State newspaper in the near future. Watch for it. Thanks, TJ, for the opportunity.You can google Viper Ride if you would like to learn more about it.

 This year the VETERANS DAY PARADE held downtown is going to be different. The event will be on November 16th however there will not be a parade. There is a kick-off event planned for September 26th at which time we will learn more about this year’s event. I believe the event will start at the War Memorial downtown. There will be a walk of honor for about a block to waiting busses that will take Veterans to Potawatomi for a sit-down reception dinner. It will be a Veteran only event and you must be pre-registered and an entrée option picked. I will get more information at the kick-of and include it in the November newsletter.

The Post has an e-mail address, it is GREENDALEVFW@GMAIL.COM.The Post’s web site is us out on FACEBOOK.

 Once again, this year the Post will have available Raffle Calendars for 2020. The proceeds from this fund raiser goes to support the VFW Regional Office at the VA grounds. The VFW Regional Office works vigorously to obtain Veterans benefit. The Wisconsin Regional Office is one of the top three in the Nation, they secure many benefit dollars for Wisconsin Veterans. There are daily drawings and special drawings, prizes total $33,500.00 and it is anice-looking Calendar. We will be selling them until early December for $20.00 (they make nice gifts also).

The last opportunity to purchase VFW 4th District raffle tickets for a Weber Spirit Three Burner Gas Grill, $200.00 second place prize, $100.000 third place prize and $50.00 fourth place prize will be at the September 23 Post and Auxiliary meeting. The tickets are $2.00 each or three for $5.00 the tickets are only sold by VFW Posts within the county. The drawing is September 29th.

Our next regular Post meeting willbeSEPTEMBER 23RDat our regular start time of 6:30 pm.
