Newsletter April 2012

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,

SINCE OUR LAST NEWSLETTER:   At our March Post meeting we welcomed two new members, Brian Bird and Steve Sahs. We also did a swearing in ceremony for these two new members plus two recently signed new members, Terry Barrington and Richard Carr. Happy to have you all as Post members and glad you could attend the meeting.

The Post has sent condolences and a donation to the family of Henry Zydowicz. Henry was a World War II veteran and Post member, he passed away February 27th at the age of 92. We also would like to extend get well wishes to Al Meyer, Jose Mendez, Harold Khehnel and Andy Garraghan.

On March 25th Quartermaster Ken Kieck, Adjutant Mike Kieck and myself assisted Ralph Steffens our VAVS representative in taking twenty Veterans from the VA Hospital to an Admirals Hockey game. It was a rewarding experience.

CURRENT EVENTS:  The process of updating our Post By-Laws has come to an end. The members heard the changes for the third and final time at the March meeting and the members unanimously approved the changes. They have been submitted to VFW National for approval.

At the March meeting we opened the nomination for the election of Officers for the 2012-2013 VFW year. There are people nominated for each position at this time however the nominations remain open until our election at the April meeting. Anyone interested in running for a position or interested in an appointed position please contact me. Installation will be on Wednesday May 16th, 5:30pm cocktails, 6:30 dinner (Daniel’s Catering). and a cost  of $10.00 per person.

COMING UP:  The Post members have agreed to proceed with the bus trip to the Highground Veterans Memorial in Neillsville Wisconsin. We have agreed on Saturday July 21. We have arranged for a 55 passenger Motor coach (air conditioned with bathroom facilities) to leave for the Highground at 7:30 am on Saturday morning and will return around 7 PM. We will have a guided tour as well as free time at the Highground Memorial after a light lunch at the Neillsville Legion Post 73. The lunch is sponsored by the members of VFW Post 10519. Attached is a registration form for the trip, the cost is $25.00 per person, refundable up to July 1st. This trip is open to any veteran and their guest. We will offer this to Post members first, then the 416 Legion members and then expand to other Posts as needed to fill the bus. It looks to be an enjoyable day. The Highground memorial is an impressive place.

We are fast approaching our May Poppy Distribution weekend. The date for the community Poppy distribution is Friday May 11th and Saturday May 12th.  I cannot stress enough the importance of our Poppy distribution events. This is our main means of raising funds to do the Post’s business. We are an active and fairly well funded Post due to the efforts of our members during these Poppy events. In order to sustain our level of helping Veterans we need more help. Please consider offering some time on May 11th and/or May 12th. Please contact Roger Volland at 414-421-8030, Ken Kieck at 414-421-8621 or John Ustruck at 414-327-2754, or you can sign up at
the April meeting. One of the more effective way of receiving donations is having both our younger and senior Veterans in uniform. Please plan on helping in whatever capacity you can.

If you cannot help out in May keep in mind the Brewers dates- June 18th and 19th, July 26th,27th, 28th and July 29th and also August 20th and 21st. Please mark your calendars and plan to participate. It is important for the future of our Post, you are needed.

For those of you who use a computer keep in mind that the Post has an e-mail address, it is GREENDALEVFW@GMAIL.COM. We would be glad to hear from you. And also check out the Post’s web site at

Our next Post meeting will be the election of Officers on APRIL 23rd, 2012 starting 7:30  pm ( April has five Monday’s). I hope many of you can attend.

“It is the mission of The Highground to honor Veterans and their families and to educate about the cost of things – the human cost.

It is the vision of The Highground to honor human courage and sacrifice wherever it is displayed, without either denying or glorifying the pain and suffering of war or of life.

It is important to recognize that The Highground is not a war memorial. It is a Veterans Memorial Park that pays tribute to the Dead, and honors the Survivors, their service, and their sacrifices. It also pays tribute to the people who supported them when they were away and upon their return.”
