Greetings Post Members, and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,
As I write this on April 14th the temperature is in the upper thirties, winter just won’t let go. I would like to announce and welcome our newest member Donald Almquist. Don has been a member of the VFW. He transferred to our Post last month. Welcome Don.
The main point of this Newsletter is FUND RAISING. I am sure everyone understands that the VFW, at the Post level, cannot exist without funds and we certainly could not help out needy Veterans and Veteran causes without money. How much we help Veterans depends on how much we raise. Our fund raising consists of our community Poppy distribution and our Poppy and bracelet distribution at assigned Brewer’s games. This year our fund raising events fall within a one month period. Our community Poppy distribution is on Friday May 9th and Saturday May 10th. The Brewers games are May 30th, 31st and June 1st. The May 9th and 10th is the weekend when many other Veterans organization in the area will be out soliciting donations as well. WE NEED YOUR HELP to make this a successful event. Roger Volland has received permission from many local vendors for us to solicit donations at their business. Some of these are Speedway (two stores), GrandPa Franks, Pick n Save and several locations at Southridge just to name a few and there are many others. What we need is participants to give their time, you don’t need to be a Post member to participate, two to four hours on one or both days or longer if you can. Chairs will be provided as well as the, Poppies and donation buckets. PLEASE VOLUNTEER. We will have signup sheets at the April 28th meeting. If you can help but can’t make the meeting or if you have any questions give a call to Roger Volland at 414-430-8033 or you can call me at 414-327-2754.
I will have more information on the Brewers Poppy event in next month’s newsletter. This event could be very productive. It is a Chicago Cubs series, on a week-end, the Brewers are playing very well and the weather is normally good. Great possibilities.
At our March Post meeting the membership voted to make our 6:30 pm starting time permanent. We had been meeting at 6:30 rather than 7:30 on a trial basis. Most members prefer the earlier start time, very few did not like it. Members can be home earlier or socialize longer after the meeting. This was done in the hopes of boosting attendance. We hope the Auxiliary will also make the change permanent for their meetings. Also in an attempt to boost our April attendance we will be giving away a $25.00 gift card to Home Depot.
At the April meeting will be continue with nominations of Officers followed by the election of Officers for 2014-2015 VFW year. Don’t let elections keep you from the meeting, all positions currently have an accepted nominee so you won’t be pressured into running for anything but you certainly are welcome to. After the April election we will have the Installation of Officers ceremony and dinner, tentatively set for Wednesday May 21st. This would take the place of our May meeting. More information will be provided in next month’s Newsletter.
Don’t forget the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Wisconsin car raffle. The grand prize is $30,000.00 towards a US made vehicle of your choice from any Bergstrom Dealership in Wisconsin. It is limited to only 30,000 tickets being sold. 2nd prize is $2,500.00, 3rd- $1,000.00, 4th & 5th- $500.00 each.
