Newsletter August 2013

                                                    AUGUST 2013 NEWSLETTER

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer. It has been a cool summer compared to last year, some like it this way and some don’t.

Since our last Newsletter we had Poppy distribution at Miller Park. Originally it was scheduled for Monday, July 22nd and Wednesday,  July 24th. Due to Poppy Chairman Roger Volland ‘s vigilance and a follow up with the Brewer’s, we were given permission for  Tuesday, July 23rd as well. We had a good turnout of members on all three days. In spite of the dates not being  premier games and low attendance, we still did well with both poppies and bracelets. I will have a final report at our August meeting. Thanks again to all the Poppy volunteers.

We have one more Poppy opportunity at Miller park on Wednesday, September 4th. We will meet at the Post at 4:30 to car pool to the stadium. If you are unable to participate due to physical limitations or scheduling conflicts you can still help the Post with a monetary donation to our Poppy fund, a fund exclusively for Veterans and Veteran’s issues.

The Greendale 75th Anniversary celebration will begin this Wednesday through the week-end. The Post Color Guard will lead the parade on Sunday August 11th at noon. If you plan on attending please show your support for our brothers and sister at the American Legion food tent. If you are willing and able they could use more volunteer help with their activities.

Post member Harold Kuehnel will be in the 75th Parade representing Korean War Veterans. Harold will be riding in a jeep that will be pulling a float announcing  the Greendale Veteran  Memorial  that is currently in the works.

On August 2nd, 114 Viet Nam Veterans flew to Washington DC for the first YELLOW RIBBON HONOR FLIGHT FROM WISCONSIN. The group left the EEA AirVenture in the morning and returned after the air show. There were 525 applicants of which 114 were accepted. Post member and Legion Commander Tim Baranzyk was one of those selected for this honor.  Congratulations Tim on being selected. I am sure it was a very moving and emotional experience.

The Post monthly meeting attendance has been down the last several months. This is not uncommon for the summer months but we hope that now that summer is winding down our attendance will be back up. We are an active Post, please come and be part of it.

On Sunday, August 11th, Veterans, Military personnel and their families will receive FREE admission to the Wisconsin State Fair.  Present a Military ID (DD214) or a VA ID at any admission entrance for free admission for you and up to three family members until 4pm.
