Newsletter February 2012

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,

I hope everyone had a happy Holiday season. As of this writing we are well into what has been a very mild winter for Wisconsin, I personally hope it continues.

Andy Garraghan remains at the VA hospital. Once again we send best wishes to Al Meyer and Gil Parazinski who are both currently dealing with some health issues. And I can happily report that Ralph Steffens is back home after a lengthy stay at the VA.

We also would like to welcome two new members, CHARLES BREITZMAN and RICHARD CARR. And we want to welcome a transfer member, JAMES COOK. Glad to have you all onboard.

Our current Post Service Officer, Andy Garraghan is currently unable to perform the Service Officers duties. Ralph Steffens our current VAVS representative has agreed to take on those extra duties as the Post Service Officer. On behalf of all the Post members I would like to thank Andy for his many years of service as our Post Service Officer.

The members are currently in the process of updating our Post By-Laws. Our current by-laws are ten years old and it has been recommended that we update them and get them approved by National. The changes we are discussing are minor. There are not any major changes. Part of the process is to read the changes at a membership meeting on three occasions. We read the changes at the January meeting and we will do so again in February and March before submitting them for approval.

The Post is looking into putting together a bus trip to the Highground Veterans Memorial in Neillsville Wisconsin. For those of you who have not been there it is a very inspirational and moving memorial. Many members have been there and look forward to returning. It would be a summer trip on an air conditioned bus. We are looking into a luncheon at the local Legion Post. The cost has not been determined,\ at this point but if you think you may want to be a part of this please let your intention be known to me or one of the Post Officers so we can get an idea of how many would like to do this. It would be open to any veteran and spouse not just Post members. Again, at this point we are looking at the cost, the interest and the logistics of such an event.

It is not too soon to be thinking about our May Poppy Distribution weekend. Please plan on helping in whatever capacity you can. If the soliciting of Poppy donation does not appeal to you there are other jobs available to help out. This event and the Brewer’s Poppy distribution days are the back bone of our fund raising.

For those of you who use a computer keep in mind that the Post has an e-mail address, it is GREENDALEVFW@GMAIL.COM. We would be glad to hear from you. And also check out the Post’s web site at

Our next Post meeting will be held on, FEBRUARY 27TH, 2012 starting 7:30  pm. I hope many of you can attend.
