Greendale VFW Post #10519
Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,
This is the first Newsletter for 2013. We had decided that there was not enough VFW activity in January to warrant a Newsletter mailing. I hope you all have a happy and healthy new year. And I hope the Post continues as an active and growing Post for 2013.
Several Post members are dealing with serious health issues, Jim Stephenson is in hospice care at VA, Ralph Stephens is currently in the ICU at the VA hospital and Stan Krolcki is being cared for at home. We wish them all well.
On December 15th seven Post members and one Auxiliary member attended “THE WREATHS ACCROSS AMERICA” at the National Cemetery on the VA grounds. The program was to honor the fallen, and a wreath laying ceremony on the graves of Veterans. A picture of the Post members in attendance can be found in last month’s VFW State newspaper.
On December 20th I was privileged to attend a Christmas bell ringing concert on the ninth floor of the VA. The bell ringers, including Ralph Steffen, our VAVS representative, played for the patients on the ninth floor. Following the concerts the group consisting of about seven players, some spouses, myself and two nurses retired to a room for a Christmas dinner. The dinner was sponsored by the Post, the Vets and spouses were very appreciative and wished us all a Merry Christmas.
The dispute between the War Memorial Center, Milwaukee County and Milwaukee Arts Museum continues. There has been some news in the paper recently but not much content. As it stands now, the Veterans and the Milwaukee Arts Museum will enter into arbitration with a retired Wisconsin Supreme Court justice in hopes of resolving the issues.
I also have no new news regarding the Greendale Veteran’s memorial. The committee continues to meet monthly. At this point there is a lot activity going on in the background, setting up the board, electing officers, making contacts with City Officials etc. But at this point there is nothing definite to report. The memorial board is co-Chaired by Tim Baranczk, representing the American Legion and Ken Kieck, representing the VFW. Dave Pier is the Treasurer.
At the January meeting the members voted in a new transfer member, Dale Crass from Post 5716. He lives in Greenfield, is an Army vet, and served in Vietnam. Welcome to the Post Dale.
Also in January the Post had an opportunity to do some fund raising. Senior Vice Bill Pekrul’s son is the owner of M W Marine in Hales Corners. He generously allowed the Post some space at his exhibit at the Boat Show in West Allis. For two weekends in January we had Post volunteers at the Boat show distributing Poppies and patriotic bracelets, as well as some recruiting. It was a successful event, we raised over $800. Thanks to all the members who volunteered their time- Bill Pekrul, Bob Karwowski, Harold Kuehnel, Don Furdek, John Lembach and Trish, Ken Kieck, John and Nancy Ustruck. John. And a very special THANK YOU to Bill’s son for allowing us this opportunity.
The Post was contacted in early January by the new Wal-Mart store manager on 76th Street asking if the Post could provide a Color Guard Squad to present the Colors at their January 23rd Grand Opening. We accepted their invitation to present and retire the Colors at the Grand Opening. As usual the Color Guard did an excellent job. Members of the Color Guard in attendance were Bill Pekrul, Harold Kuehnel, Bon Karwowski, Ken Kieck and myself.
Our newly approved Post By-Laws now require a onetime $5.00 “admissions fee” in addition to the annual dues, The first year dues is now $35.00.
Ken Kieck (414-421-8621) has a size large, blue VFW Men’s Downtown jacket (page 35 VFW Store Catalog) with Post embroidery. Worn once. Free to first interested member.
