Newsletter January 2012

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,

There was not a regular Post meeting December.

In early December I received notice from VFW National Headquarters congratulating the Post for the distinct honor of achieving the goal of over 100% membership for 2011-2012 year. Congratulations and thanks to all the members and officers who contributed to membership recruitment and retention. Thanks to all of you.

On December 3rd members of the VFW and Legion meet at the Post for a Pearl Harbor remembrance program.

On December 10th he Post had our annual Christmas Dinner. It was attended by 64 people, a very nice turn out. The food and drink was very good and the many home made deserts and appetizers were excellent. Thanks to all that attended and to all who helped in the preparation.

Ralph Steffens and Andy Garraghan remain at the VA hospital and we send best wishes to Al Meyer who was hospitalized at St Francis during part of December. Get well wishes go to those members and any who are currently dealing with health issues.

Many Post members participated in the WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA ceremony. The Wreaths Across America ceremony was held on Saturday, December 10th at 11:00 AM. It was sunny, breezy and quite cold.  Members who braved the cold to lay wreaths at VA cemetery were Harold Kuehnnel, Bill Pekrul, Bob Karwowski, Ken Kieck, Mike & Sandy Kieck, Dan & Pattie Buttery, Don Furdek, Tim Baranzyk and John Ustruck.

On December 13th there was an event at the Knights of Columbus on 92nd Street called “CHRISTMAS DINNER FOR VETERANS”. 150 needy veterans were honored with a free Christmas meal. The Post made a generous donation to this event and several members and wives attended the dinner at their own expense. Those attending were Harold and Pauline Kuehnel, Don and Mary Furdek, Bob and Karen Karwowski, Tim and Kathy Baranzyk and John Ustruck.

December had been a busy time for the Post and I am sure for our members as well. The Holiday’s have come and gone and the calendar year has ended. Welcome to 2012. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas

Looking ahead to 2012 there are many things we need to do and many things we need to keep on doing. Most important for the year is our Poppy distribution efforts. The  Poppy program, both the May community drive and the Brewers events, are the backbone of our Post. This is where we get the financial resources to do all the great things we do in helping Veterans and Veterans causes.  Please plan on giving some of your time in this area. Other activities coming up will be the mid-winter Conference in Wisconsin  Dells this February. We will be going over our Post by-laws and updating them as needed. We are looking to send out a questionnaire to our members for feedback, opinions, comments and to update our mailing list. And we will continue to do the Post’s business in meeting all the District, State and National requirements.

For those of you who use a computer keep in mind that the Post has an e-mail address, it is GREENDALEVFW@GMAIL.COM. We would be glad to hear from you. And also check out the Post’s web site at

Our next Post meeting will be held on Monday, January 23rd, 2012 starting 7:30  pm. I hope to see you all there.
