Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,
SINCE OUR LAST NEWSLETTER: We had our Community Poppy distribution on May 11th and May 12th. The results were good but not as good as last year. Part of the reason was this year’s Poppy distribution did not include the Stein’s Garden Centers. We did not get permission to return this year. I don’t know the reason we were not invited back but I would like to thank them for the many successful years we did have there. For that reason and that there were fewer volunteers and some that spent less time than they did in past years our numbers were down slightly. None the less we had good results. That couldn’t have happened without the many volunteers who gave their time. They were; Don Furdek, Louis Fischer, Bob Kennedy, Bob Karwowski, Thereas Mcquire, Jim Lamb, Mike Menting, Bill Pekrul, Ken Schneider, Roger & Marilyn Volland Jerry White, Ken Kieck,, Amanda Patterson, Jose Mendez, Kristie Milne, Jill Woznicki, Tony Chandek, Nancy and John Ustruck. A special thanks goes out to the ones who organized things, counted the money, kept records and spent the entire Poppy time “on duty”. Many thanks to out-going Poppy Chairman Roger Volland for once again doing a fine job. And thanks to Elaine Kriesel and sister Barb for their organizational skills in directing activities and record keeping. Roger, Elaine and Barb’s many years of Poppy experience has been invaluable to the Post. Thanks again to all who participated.
Also since our last newsletter we had the Installation of Officers on May 16th. Approximately 55 people attended, we enjoyed a fine meal and time socializing. It was an excellent turn out to show support for our Officers for the 2012-2013 VFW year. Your Officer for the new year are; COMMANDER /JOHN USTRUCK, QUARTERMASTER/KEN KIECK, SENIOR VICE /BILL PEKRUL, CHAPLIN/ROGER VOLLAND, JUNIOR VICE/THERESA MCQUIRE, SURGEON/TERRY BARRINGTON AND TRUSTEE/BOB KENNEDY.
Those who have agreed to accept appointments for the coming year are: OFFICER OF THE DAY/HAROLD KUEHNEL, ADJUTANT/MIKE KIECK, SERVICE OFFICER/RALPH STEFFENS, GUARD/LOUIS FISCHER, HISTORIAN/DON FURDEK, MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN/DON FURDEK, POPPY CHAIRMAN-remains open.
The Installation of the Ladies Auxiliary also took place. As of July 1st the new President of the Auxiliary will be Nancy Ustruck. Outgoing President Mandy Patterson has been the President for 20 years and has done an excellent job through out her many years of service. In appreciation of Amanda’s excellent service through the years the Post will be installing a Memorial Brick in her honor. Thank You Amanda for a job well done.
CURRENT EVENTS: On June 18th and 19th we will have the first of three poppy distribution opportunities at the Brewers Stadium. I cannot stress enough the importance of these Poppy events. This is our main means of raising funds to do the Post’s business. In order to sustain our level of helping Veterans we need your help. Chairs are available for those in need. Please consider offering some time on June 18th and June 19th. Please contact Ken Kieck at 414-421-8621 or John Ustruck at 414-327-2754 to let us know if you can help on one or both dates. The games begin at 7:10 in the evening we will meet at the Post at 4:00 pm and ride over as a group. We will return to the Post between 8:00 and 8:30.
COMING UP: The Post will be sponsoring a bus trip to the Highground Veterans Memorial in Neillsville Wisconsin. We have agreed on Saturday July 21. We have arranged for a 55 passenger Motor coach (air conditioned with bathroom facilities) to leave for the Highground at 7:30 am on Saturday morning and will return around 7 PM. We will have a guided tour as well as free time at the Highground Memorial after a light lunch at the Neillsville Legion Post 73. The lunch is sponsored by the members of VFW Post 10519. Attached is a registration form for the trip, the cost is $25.00 per person, refundable up to July 1st. This trip is open to any veteran and their guest. The Highground memorial is an impressive place.
Keep in mind the other Poppy distribution Brewers dates- July 26th, 27th, 28th and July 29th and also August 20th and 21st. Please mark your calendars and plan to participate. It is important for the future of our Post, you are needed.

“It is the mission of The Highground to honor Veterans and their families and to educate about the cost of things – the human cost.
It is the vision of The Highground to honor human courage and sacrifice wherever it is displayed, without either denying or glorifying the pain and suffering of war or of life.
It is important to recognize that The Highground is not a war memorial. It is a Veterans Memorial Park that pays tribute to the Dead, and honors the Survivors, their service, and their sacrifices. It also pays tribute to the people who supported them when they were away and upon their return.”
