      MARCH-2012 NEWSLETTER

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,

SINCE OUR LAST NEWSLETTER:

My wife and I enjoyed a two week vacation in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. It is an annual event meant to get away from our Wisconsin winter. There was no winter to escape from this year but it was still good to get way for awhile. Sorry I had to miss the February meeting. I understand our Senior Vice Bill Pekrul did a fine job in conducting the Posts affairs in my absence.

CURRENT EVENTS:

The members are currently in the process of updating our Post By-Laws. Our current by-laws are ten years old and it has been recommended that we update them and get them approved by National. We will be reading the By-laws for the third and final time at the March meeting and at that time will we will take a vote to approve the updated By-laws. Upon approval they will then be submitted for approval by VFW National.

The VA is conducting a research program called the MILLION VETERAN PROGRAM. The MVP is a national, voluntary research program conducted by the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Research & Development. The goal of MVP is to partner with Veterans receiving their care in the VA Healthcare System to study how genes affect health. To do this, MVP will build the world’s largest medical database by safely collecting blood samples and health information from one million Veteran volunteers. Data collected from MVP will be stored anonymously for research on diseases like diabetes and cancer, and military-related illnesses, such as post-traumatic stress disorder. If interested or for more information contact Ralph Steffens our Service Officer/VAVS representative at 414-315-7029 or call toll free at 866-441-6075 or visit www.research.va.gov/mvp.

COMING UP:

The Milwaukee Brewer Community Foundation (BCF) has selected Fisher House Wisconsin as the charity to receive all the funds from this years, 14th Annual 5K Famous Sausage Walk/Run set to occur on July 28th. I will have more information in next month’s newsletter regarding this worthy effort, it deserves our support.

The Post is still looking into putting together a bus trip to the Highground Veterans Memorial in Neillsville Wisconsin. We have received some estimates from local Bus companies and are in contact with the Highground as well as the Neillsville Legion Post to secure a possible date. There will be more information to follow. Again, at this point we are looking at the cost, the interest and the logistics of such an event.

At our March meeting we will be accepting the nomination of Officers for the upcoming VFW year, July 1st 2012 through June 30th 2013. The nominations will remain open until the election at the April meeting. The positions for election are Commander, Senior Vice Commander, Junior Vice Commander, Quartermaster, Chaplin, Judge Advocate, Surgeon, and one Trustee. All other positions are appointed by the Commander elect.

As was mentioned in the last newsletter it is not too soon to be thinking about our May Poppy Distribution weekend. The date for the community Poppy distribution is Friday May 11th and Saturday May 12th. Please plan on helping in whatever capacity you can. If the soliciting of Poppy donation does not appeal to you there are other jobs available to help out. This event and the Brewer’s Poppy distribution days are the back bone of our fund raising. Milwaukee Brewers has authorized our Post to distribute Poppies on June 18th and 19th, July 26th,27th, 28th and July 29th and also August 20th and 21st. Please mark your calendars and plan to participate. It is important for the future of our Post, you are needed.

For those of you who use a computer keep in mind that the Post has an e-mail address, it is GREENDALEVFW@GMAIL.COM. We would be glad to hear from you. And also check out the Post’s web site at www.myvfw.org/wi/post10519
