OCTOBER 2015 NEWSLETTER
Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,
I would like to start this newsletter by offering best wishes and a speedy recovery for Bob Kennedy and Ralph Steffens who are both still recuperating from health issues. On a brighter note, I would like to welcome new member Mark Tabbert to the VFW and the Greendale Post. Mark is an Army-Viet Nam veteran. Welcome Mark.
We had our two allotted Poppy distribution games at Miller Park on October 2nd and the 4th against the Chicago Cubs. I am happy to report it was very successful in spite of the cool windy conditions. Two things made it successful, one is the generosity of the many Cubs fans in attendance (there were not many Brewer’s fan ) and secondly and most important was the excellent turn out of volunteers. 18 people answered the call for this very important fund raiser, including five Auxiliary members and two Veterans not members of the Post, ages ranged from the twenties to the nineties. The donations exceeded our expectations. If you want to know how well we did I will have a full report at the October meeting. Thanks again to all the members who answered the call and braved the weather, you are the ones responsible for the success of this event. Thanks to Roger Volland for taking the lead. I think it is important to list those who participated they are from the post; Roger Volland, Ken Kieck, Bill Pekrul, Theresa McQuire, Zach Mayo, Don Furdek, Bob Karwowski, Bob Birningham, Dan Connatty, Len Baraga and John Ustruck, from the Auxiliary; Nancy Ustruck, Jill Woznicki, Shirely Meyer, Marilyn Volland, and Julie Pipke. Friends of the Post and Veterans; Jim Fridl and Tony Chandek.
The Greendale Veterans Memorial has progressed to the next stage. This past month a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the City, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The memorandum spells out the responsibilities of the City and the Veterans. The land has been approved and we can now move on to the next step which is the fund raising for the Memorial. We have three years to raise the approximately $250,000 needed to build the Memorial. There will be many opportunities in the near future for you to participate in the fund raising and/or to contribute to it. Much more to follow.
The date for the Post Christmas Party is Saturday December 19th. We are in the early planning stage but the Christmas Party will be very similar to last years. $20.00 per person, the same caterer with a similar menu and evening agenda. Sign up will start in early November and end at the November 23rd meeting. More to follow in next month’s newsletter.
Both the Post and Auxiliary have 2016 RAFFLE CALENDARS available. They can be purchased at our monthly meeting through December, time is running out. If you cannot attend a meeting but would like to purchase a Raffle Calendar call me and I will try to make arrangements to get them to you.
The Veterans Day Parade will be November 7th, 2015 in downtown Milwaukee. The parade starts at 11 am. The Post Honor Guard will be marching. Please come out and provide spectator support for our Post and all the Veterans groups that participate.
If you know of any Post member that is ill or in need of any type of support please let me know. Let us know if you have an address change or if you no longer want a newsletter mailed but would prefer to get it electronically.
