Newsletter Post 10519 December, 2014

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,
Since our last newsletter the Veterans Day parade was held on November 8th . Your VFW Post 10519 Color Guard was well represented, marching were Harold Kuehnnel, Ken Kieck, Bob Karwowski, Theresa McQuire and John Ustruck. Auxiliary President Nancy Ustruck carried the Auxiliary flag and Laura Calteux carried the Legion flag. Don Furdek supplied and drove the convertible that carried Bill Pekrul and Veteran of the year Roger Volland. This year the Greendale 416 Firing Squad also participated in the parade.

At the November meeting we had our Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy presentations and awards. It was well attended by the contestants and their families. Post and Auxiliary turnout was poor due to the inclement weather. A special Thank You to Amanda Patterson for all the work she puts into the program. Her many years of service is greatly appreciated by the Post. After the presentations and awards we were able to socialize with the students and their families. Thanks to all who brought desserts, it was a successful and enjoyable evening for both the participants and the few members in attendance. Nina Goyette has won the first place in the District for her Patriots Pen presentation and will represent the Post at the February District meeting. Congratulations Nina.

The Post and Auxiliary does not have a snow cancellation by-law or procedure. If you plan on attending a Post or Auxiliary meeting and the weather is not good call me or Nancy between four and five thirty on the night of the meeting and we will inform you of the decision to hold the meeting or cancel. However do whatever is in the best interest of your safety.

On Sunday, December 7th there was a Pearl Harbor ceremony at the Post. It was attended by VFW members and the Legion Firing Squad and about a dozen spectators. Being on a Sunday morning may have affected the attendance.

The Christmas Party was held on December 6th. There were 72 people in attendance. The food by Daniel’s Catering was very good, there were a lot of favorable comments. The Post provided door prizes and Marilyn Volland had gifts for all. Marilyn spends a lot of time and money on her gift presentation. Thanks very much Marilyn. The dinner and social time was fun and festive as well. Thanks to all who brought in appetizers or desserts. As usual they we very good and plenty of them

This coming Saturday, December 13th Post members will be participating in the WREATHS ACCROSS AMERICA ceremony at Wood’s National Cemetery. It is a nice program that we participate in yearly, beside the Patriotic ceremony there will be the laying of wreaths at various grave sites. If you would like to join us we will meet at the Post at 10 am on the 13th and carpool to the Cemetery. Dress for the weather.

As of this date there is nothing new to report regarding Greendale VFW Memorial. The Greendale School Board has rejected the proposed site. The Memorial committee has not announced how it will proceed.

Related to the Memorial, SAL Post 416 is running a Casino Night on Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 7 – 10:30PM at the Greendale post. Admission is $12 and proceeds will be donated to the Greendale Veteran Memorial. The SAL organizers are looking for volunteers from the American Legion and VFW for blackjack dealers and other support functions at this event.

The Post has an e-mail address, it is GREENDALEVFW@GMAIL.COM. If you have any questions or concerns call or e-mail me. The Post’s web site is: Check us out on FACEBOOK.
