Newsletter Post 10519 March, 2014

Greetings Post Members, and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,
I hope everyone is surviving this unusually nasty winter weather. I think we are all fed up with it and are looking forward to some Spring like temperatures.
I would like acknowledge our newest Post member James Pallan. James is an Air Force Veteran. Welcome to the Post.
I want to thank Senior Vice Theresa McQuire for conducting the February meeting in my absence. At the February meeting Post members passed a motion to send a monetary donation to the family of Staci Napoli, the West Allis Police Officer who died during child birth. Stacie was an Iraq war veteran. Our sympathies to her family.
Once again Junior Vice Bill Pekrul’s son (owner of M W Marine in Hales Corners) has stepped up to help Veterans. He generously allowed the HONOR OUR MILITARY INC. some space at his exhibit at the SPORT SHOW in West Allis. Honor Our Military are the people who put together the VETERAN’S DAY PARADE in November in downtown Milwaukee. The Sport Show is one of their many fund raisers for the parade. Many different Veterans groups help out during this event but our Post has the most volunteers. This year’s volunteers are: Bill Pekrul, Bob Karwowski, Harold Kuehnel, Tim Baranzyk, John Lembach and Ken Kieck. A very special THANK YOU to Bill’s son for allowing HONOR OUR MILITARY INC. an opportunity to raise the much needed funds.
Each year the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Wisconsin puts out a calendar raffle to raise funds for the VFW at the State level. This year they have also introduced a limited raffle The grand prize is $30,000.00 towards a US made vehicle of your choice from any Bergstrom Dealership in Wisconsin. It is limited to only 30,000 tickets being sold. 2nd prize is $2,500.00, 3rd- $1,000.00, 4th & 5th- $500.00 each. Tickets are $10.00 each, the drawing in June 7th, you do not need to be present to win. Tickets are available through Ken Kieck our Quartermaster (421-8621) or myself (327-2754) We will have them available at our monthly meeting and at the Post on Wednesday’s noon to one .
I would like to remind everyone that our Community Poppy days are coming on May 9th and 10th. I also want to remind everyone, Post and Auxiliary, that the two days in May and the three days at Miller Park on May 30th, 31st and June 1st are our main fund raisers. What we do in those five days will set our budget for next year and what we can do for Veterans. Please help out on one or more of these dates. Two to four hours of your time is all that is needed, chairs are available for those unable to stand long. It is a rewarding experience. If you are unable to participate in any of the fund raisers and would still like to help we do accept donations to the Poppy fund. All the money collected goes entirely to veterans through the different programs that we support such as the Fisher House, Honor Our Military, Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative, the VA Hospital, Honor Flight and many others.
It has been a concern that the attendance at our monthly Post meetings has been down. I am sure that some of that was due to the weather this winter. If anyone wishes to attend a meeting but has transportation issues they can contact me and I would attempt to make arrangements for a ride. In an attempt boost attendance it was decided by the Post members and also by the Auxiliary to ADJUST THE START TIME FOR OUR MONTHLY MEETINGS FROM 7:30 PM TO 6:30 PM. For now this is a temporary change but it does seem to be popular so far. If there are other reasons why you don’t attend I would like to know what they are. Please contact me with any comments or ideas.
The Post has an e-mail address, it is GREENDALEVFW@GMAIL.COM. If you have any questions or concerns call or e-mail me. The Post’s web site is and we are now on FACEBOOK, Check it out. If you would prefer to receive your Post Newsletter and Auxiliary Newsletters and other information updates by e-mail, send an e-mail to GREENDALEVFWNEWS @GMAIL.COM.
OUR NEXT REGULARLY SCHEDULED MEETING IS MARCH 24TH AT 6:30 PM. I HOPE YOU CAN JOIN US. Be advised that there are five Monday’s in March, we meet on the fourth Monday.
