Greendale VFW Post #10519

                                                      OCTOBER 2013 NEWSLETTER

Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,

At our September meeting we had guest speaker, Marie Honel  (Representative of Volunteer Program Coordinator for Veterans), she addressed both the Post members and Auxiliary members. Marie talked about opportunities in making a positive difference in the life of a veteran through the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Volunteers for Veterans Program. This program connects volunteers who are 55 and over to opportunities with local agencies serving veterans and their families. Volunteer opportunities are varied and flexible, based on your interests and schedule, and include delivering a box of groceries, driving, serving meals and more. To learn more, contact Marie Honel, Volunteer Program Coordinator for Veterans at (414) 220-8683 or You can check out their web site at

Roger Volland, our outgoing Poppy Chairman has submitted a letter to the Milwaukee Brewer’s organization requesting dates for Poppy distribution for 2014.  Once the Brewer’s respond,  I will pass that information on  to you. We are hoping for many dates and hopefully some premium games.

The “MILWAUKEE HOMELESS VETERANS INITIATIVE” operates an emergency food pantry to help Veterans who are in short term crisis situation. MHVI put out a request in September for donations to help replenish the cupboards.  Post member,  Kristin Dodds,  answered the call for help  by organizing a food drive through her employer Hydrite Chemical. Due to Kristin’s efforts over 400 pounds of food was collected in one weeks time (September  16-20) from Hydrite Chemicals four Milwaukee area locations. Kristen presented the collected food and a $500.00 donation check from the Post to MHVI Board member Paul Moriarty. Paul stated that all of the food will go into their Emergency Food Pantry that serves Veterans in transition who may not have access to a regular food bank for a nutrition program. They also supply a box of food to Veterans they help move into their first apartments. MHVI moves 20 to 25 Veterans per week.  Thanks Kristin for a job well done.

The Veterans Day parade will be on November  9th starting at 11 am. Your VFW Post 10519 Color Guard will be marching as always. This year we will have a vehicle behind the Color Guard honoring  the Post’s VETERAN OF THE YEAR, BILL PEKRUL. The vehicle door sign will  present Bill as our Veteran of the year, a World War II Veteran, a D-Day Invasion participant and that Bill had been awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star. I hope many of you can make the parade to honor all Veterans.

As I mentioned in the August and September  Newsletters  the Post monthly meeting attendance has been down. If anyone wishes to attend a meeting but has transportation issues contact me. Depending on the circumstances we may be able to make arrangements for  a ride.

Another quick reminder, our Post Christmas Party is scheduled for December 14th.  More information will be in the November newsletter.
