Greetings Members and Friends of Greendale VFW Post 10519,
I would like to begin the newsletter by welcoming new member Kristin Dodds, an Army Afghan Vet. Welcome to the Post.
Last month we also had the sad duty of saying good bye to long time Post member Jim Stephenson. He passed away at the VA Hospice on April 7th. His funeral with Military Honors was on April 11th. Jim was at one time very active in helping Veterans and is one of our most decorated World War II Vets. Our condolences to his family.
At the end of last year, members of the Post voted to help Greendale Eagle Scout Joe Maciejewski with a Scout project that he initiated at the Wehr Center at Whitnal Park. Joe was at the April meeting and gave the members a final report of the project and presented a plaque in appreciation of our financial help.
At the March 25th meeting and the April 22nd meeting we had nominations for Post Officers for the 2013-2014 VFW year. The election of Officers took place at the April meeting. The new Officers are Commander – John Ustruck, Quartermaster – Ken Kieck, Senior Vice Commander – Theresa McQuire, Junior Vice Commander – Bill Pekrul, Chaplin – Roger Volland, Surgeon – Harold Kuehnel and a three year Trustee – Bob Karwowski.
The Installation of Officer’s ceremony and dinner will take place May 15th. The Installing Officer will be Phil Jasinski. He is a Past State Commander, Post Commander and is currently the Chief of Staff for the current State Commander Woody Woodworth. There will not be a meeting on the fourth Monday in May, the installation on the 15th is the May meeting.
The cost for the dinner and cocktails is $10.00 per person. You must sign up and pre-pay by May 10th. RSVP with payment to Nancy Ustruck at 3812 S. 57th Street Milwaukee, Wi 53220. Mail a check if you plan on attending. Cocktails begin at 5:30, dinner at 6:30 followed by the Installation of Officers Ceremony. It will be a catered event with the food supplied by Daniel’s catering. Desserts and appetizers will be supplied by the Ladies Auxiliary and some non members. Please join us for this social event.
As reported in last month’s newsletter Post members and several other Veteran organizations participated in the Veteran’s Parade Fundraising at Miller Park. It took place on April 19, 20th and 21st. The series was against the Cubs. In spite of the cool weather a lot of money was collected for the parade. Thanks to all the members who participated.
The next opportunity to volunteer will be for our Post’s May Community Poppy campaign. The dates are May 10 and May 11th. If you would like to participate on either one or both days please contact Poppy Chairman Roger Volland at 421-8030. We have the permission of area business’ to solicit donations through Poppy distribution. Chairs are available for those who prefer not to stand.
Please plan on participating in some capacity. I know I am repeating myself but it is important for everyone to understand the importance of our Poppy distribution in May and the Poppy/wristband solicitation at the five Brewers games. This is our main source of raising funds. What we do at those events determines our budget and how we proceed during the year. We don’t do dances, Bingo, dinners or raffles. Please give whatever time you can.
