William D. “Bill” Bottoms, the venerable author, editor chronicler of VFW History for many years has died at the age of 85 after after an extended stay at a nursing home in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
Born in Storm Lake, Iowa, Bill Bottoms served in the USAF in the South Pacific, earning his eligibility for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, an organization for which he labored long and hard. He rose to the position of Iowa State Commander and earned honors in the position. He was a vigorous and outspoken leader in our organization.
Bill and his wife of 45 years, Marjorie, had three children, daughters Deborah and Melodie, and a son, W. Joseph, all of Iowa.
His VFW service included editorship of the Iowa VFW State Newspaper, the Wisconsin VFW News for many years and the National VFW Magazine. He received numerous awards for his editorial work.
Bill Bottoms also authored the first published history of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. He authored a trilogy: Purloined Pines, Times and Tides and End of an Era. He also published Carnage by Committee.
A visitation is planned for Friday evening from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the funeral home, WEST CHAPEL of Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, 1405 N. Clairemont Ave. in Eau Claire. Services will take place Saturday, October 18th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eau Claire. He will be interred at the Veterans Cemetary at Spooner on Monday, October 20th.
The family has asked that any donations go to the Wisconsin VFW Unmet Needs Program in care of Department Headquarters.
